Default engine miss, stutter, judder on heavy acceleration

2005 X Type 3.0 auto sport wagon 115k This car fell through the cracks landed in my lap at a very good price good maintenance history up to 102k.
All vacumn hoses and o rings replaced.
Car stutters when getting on the freeway. The stutter will occur once and won't happen again until the engine is shut off and restarted. Tested it the other day after driving on the freeway getting off stopping the engine restarting after 30 minutes.
Before getting on the freeway I held the accelerator down while in park and at 3000 rpm
the car had the "miss" while not moving.
Proceeded to get on the freeway the stutter started, I worked through it and off it went never doing it again until the next stop.
CEL light came on originally--not willing to pay
$102.00 for reading. I am thinking airmass meter or bad fuel.

first.
all high st auto parts stores will scan your car for free
second
a code reader is very cheap, a bluetooth code reader is under $5.
thirdlyish
without codes there are many many many ....many things to cause your symptom

but my off the wall guess would be a bad coil

Default miss, stutter and judder gone

It is hard to believe that this problem has many, many variants to it's cause. What I suspected all along, was the root cause to my problem.....bad gas. There are two of the same franchised gas stations within 1/2 mile of my home, one east and one west. It is a company based in Utah.I have used these station for all my cars and I can remember thinking my Volvos were acting "sluggish" off and on and wondered if it was the gasoline.
It has taken three fill ups with chevron supreme to finally rid the tank of the "poison". I noticed the symptoms easing slowly and then finally no problem on acceleration. I I duplicated what I described in my original post taking the car 220 miles on the same route. Using the same on ramp I accelerated to merge and there was no judder or stutter, just a clean crisp pleasurable
acceleration. Taking another 80 mile jaunt two days later there is still no problem just a fast smooth ride.
This sport wagon is a very interesting car, visually very beautiful and has the elegance that is Jaguar, We will see what the car does in the next six months.

thats awesome....
but trust me....there are MANY common problems that can cause those symptoms.
in 8 yrs of ownership and 8 years in this forum i have had most of them!
As you have replaced o rings and vacuum lines you have cut down on a lot of future "issues"
happy driving!

Don't get me wrong...I trust you when you say there are many causes, I appreciate your input and will watch for your responses on other inquiries posted on the forum.
Thanks again

Is teh CEL still on? Or did it eventually go off on its own? Would still be interesting to find out what the code is/was. Even if it went off it would be stored. Could be the gas I suppose, but don't be surprised if the issue comes back at some point if it is an intermittent fault. A code reader is very cheap and in my opinion an indispensible to have.

the CEL is still on-It is my understanding that the CEL has to be cleared. Regarding these code readers I am curious as to why the reader at auto zone could not find a code and that , I was told, was because there were some codes that only a Jaguar dealer could retrieve. So why would an inexpensive code reader capture all the codes but the big fancy one at auto zone would not?
The reason I think it was the gas is because When I first test drove the car it was low on gas and I DROVE the car punching the accelerator etc. and it never stuttered---I put gas in it when I bought it and drove it 30 miles home and then around town without any problems. I then filled the tank from this "dubious" gasoline retailer [there were some negative things about them online} and that is when the problem started. I continued using that brand of gas and the problem continued. I spoke to the Jaguar dealer that had serviced the car and after describing the symptoms one of the things he suggested was try chevron or shell.
Now, like you say,I won't be surprised if the stutter returns as these cars seem to be "fussy ". But the way the problem slowly went away, [softer judders and fewer of them in between incidents] ,as I was refilling the tank just leads me to think it was bad gas.

It will self-clear after 3 warm ups if you fix the fault(s).

I think you know which retailer I am referring to.....the one that put unleaded gasoline in their diesel tanks and numerous customers were affected by that debacle. .

Like someone said, the CEL would go off on its own if the fault was intermittent and was not detected after a certain amount of drive cycles were met without the issue being present. That said, the codes would still be stored. The vast majority of the codes could be read by almost any reader. Have Auto Zone try ad read the code and see what they come up with. Then post here/do a search on here as to what it is. That will confirm what is causing the CEL.

What grade of gas are you using? I know some cars as more sensitive to having premium vs. regular grade.

+1 to iownme and Alfadude's advice to buy a cheap OBDII code reader. They are invaluable for diagnosing and repairing.

Search for "ELM327" on the Internet, Amazon or eBay. People with Android phones prefer the Bluetooth version and a free app called Torque. I use an iPhone and the Wifi ELM327 version, with a free app called OBDCarDoctor. Many more free OBDII apps are available.

They're useful to:
1) Read engine error codes
2) Before you repair the problem, clear the check engine light (CEL) multiple times to see if there's a pattern / condition that causes the error code to reappear, and
3) After you repair the problem, clear the CEL and see if it stays off, to confirm the problem is really fixed, without waiting several days while you drive around, hoping the CEL eventually turns off.

Mine's in the lower center glovebox at any given time.

As for that provider, yeah I know who it is but, really 1 incident does not dictate the company. You ever make a mistake? Should you be defined or judged always by that one mistake? I happen to know the principals as they came from my Mother's home town in Wyoming. Btw, if it were that "brand" of gas causing the problem, you better do enormous research, they are a refinery also under a different name supplying lots of other places.

A code reader is an invaluable tool -especially with these cars. My '03 X-type 3.0 started doing the same thing -a bad misfire under load. I hooked up my scanner. It showed misfire was on cylinder #5. I ordered a new coil from rockauto and put it on cylinder #5 -problem solved! You might consider replacing the fuel filter too.

to alphadude-will go to autozone tomorrow and offer up your suggestion, also, always 91 in all my cars. When the head was taken off a mercedes [that I was interested in buying] the mechanic showed me the deposits that had built up from low octane fuel. Kind of like tar from cigarettes in the lungs!

to Dell-I don't even live in Utah or Wyoming and I know more about the gas retailer in question than you do.. There is more information on the web about this company than the "diesel debacle" so much so that I will NEVER buy gasoline from them again. Incidentally do you know what a franchise is?

to foxbottom and dwclapp thanks for the info--a code reader will soon be in my possesion.

Yup, I do (former President and CSO of a $192B company, yup with a "B"). The aforementioned organization is PRIVATELY owned as are their other 2 brands (national names) and 2 brands of refineries and does NOT franchise.

So....here's your sign.......

Default miss, stutter and judder gone

contrary to what was said regarding check engine light, after retrieving two lean codes bank one and bank two the check engine light was cleared using the reader and has not come on again. Also the random misfires on my 850 Volvo went away after switching to Chevron Supreme. It was bad gasoline.
