Default Engine replacement or rebuild on X-Type

I'm no mechanic so just picking brains.

I'm in UK and just put my Jag in for a full service via ServiceStop online collect service. They called me later in day to say they will not service the car as it is only firing on 3 cylinders so it would be wasting money on service until I had engine sorted. I think it was really good that they didn't just take my £150 for service then tell me. So grateful for that.
Anyway, the mechanic that returned my car said that car needs a rebuild and this would cost between £1,000 to £2,500 for complete rebuild. Or he said If I buy a replacement engine they could just fit that for £500 over 3 days.

My question is, option one is not for me as the car is only worth about £1,000 -£1,500 so does anybody have any suggestions or advice that may help.

I love the car and really want to keep it.

I've been told that the 2lt desiel engine is a Mondeo transit van engine?

You could ask bertieboy if he has one to supply or supply and fit

No idea if it will but ask if a 2.2 will go in

Default Replacement engine for 2lt D X400

Santer

Thanks for reply.
I may do that.

Since my posting I have found many of these same engines on eBay for as little as £200 so that's looking to be like the way forward, but still would appreciate any advice or offers of a good engine replacement.
