Default Flat Spot in acceleration

I recently bought a 2005 2.5 X-Type automatic . It accelerates up to about 35-40 mph then nothing happens . Pressing the accelerator pedal further does not increase the acceleration until kickdown position is reached when it appears to change down and then is off like a rocket . Any ideas if it is meant to be like this or is there a problem ?
