Front Door Lights
There are oval shaped red plastic lenses at the lower inside edge of the front doors. On my S-Type, the same type of lens lights up when the doors are open. On my X-Type they don't. Are they supposed to? Can't seem to find any mention in either owner manual.
You guys are telling me what I expected to hear - thanks!
There's nothing in my owner manuals about these lights. So I guess the next questions are how do you open those lights to check/replace the bulbs and power? And where's the switch that turns them on?

I have an 02 X-type Sport and I don't have lights either, which I cant understand. I'd imagine the X would have come with courtesy lights, but it is what it is. It looks really easy to install them though. I plan on pulling off the door card and running wire from the door to the cabin to splice into the lights in the kick panel. Then run these wires to LED lights Ill install in the door. It seems like a very simple job, the hardest part will be to get the wire through the door to the cabin.
One other note: The little red plastic piece pops out of the door w/o having to take everything apart. If you really want to see if a bulb is in there that would be the easiest way.

This is getting even more interesting. An 02 without lights behind the lenses, my 05 that doesn't light up but hasn't been examined inside, and an 03 and one other car that do light up.
Where's the pattern to this I wonder.

WEdge, for reference, I have the upgraded navigation system, which may also include some other niceties. I bought the car used, so, what sort of options the car came with can only be determined by what I can see. I believe my car has most of the options available for 03 except for the electric front window defroster and the 6 CD changer. Pretty much all the other options are there. Lets see if we can figure this out. The drawings don't reference any "only with this package" details.

Finally had a chance to look inside - no lights in my doors (05 sportwagon).
So nothing more to do with my car on this one.
Still leaves me wondering what the feature package was that included the lights.

I have navigation/heated seats/front de-frost, no CD changer and a hole behind the lens
I hear these are only reflectors, even though they don't reflect jack all.
The ones on my mates 2002 2.0 SE light up but don't on my 2003 2.0D SE, his passenger seat also has full electric seats but mine only has half.

The electrical guides of both the 2005 and 2007 X type do not show courtesy lights whereas the 2004 S Type guide shows the courtesy lights.
I do not remember either of my X Types having courtsey lights. I Have included relevant diagrams from both.

Looking at the JTIS diagrams, from MY2001.5 to pre-MY2004.25, all those cars atleast have the option for the wiring to the door courtesy lights. But, starting with the MY2004.25 vehicles, the door courtesy lights were removed. That is what I am gathering from the information that I have. Now, why the people with cars made before the MY2004.25 vehicles don't have lights, I am still researching that one. I haven't found a rhyme or reason for that.
My 03 2.5L has the red door lights and they are pretty bright at night nice safety touch. The only option I think I have is the HVAC single CD player and a leather interior. other then that I don't know what other options were and I can't find a option list on line. Oh I have a moon roof also and automatic transmission.

My '02 3.0 x-type has them. They actually first caught my attention because the red coating seems to be stripping away and thought it would be a cool idea to put some LEDs in there, but it does require taking the door panel off. Only option my car seems to have is the CD changer.
Appears whether your X Type has puddle lights or just reflectors in the front doors is almost random. I read that the lights were deleted in 2004 but my 2002 3.0 Sport AWD definitely only has reflectors. Here's an easy, non-destructive and painless way to check. Put a small flat screwdriver blade under the trailing edge of the lens and lever. It will pop out of the door being secured by just plastic tabs on the lens. If you have relectors you will be looking at a void in the doortrim. Otherwise you'll be looking at a light bulb!! Push lens back in place comfortable in your new knowledge....
