I usually have my fuel range displaying and it has always worked when the fuel reserve light comes on....usually comes on right around 35 miles to go. If I understand you correctly, you have the odometer reading displayed. Try hitting the "Trip" button on the turn signal column switch.
teddyboy, I leave my car pretty much on MPG reading, but when I am getting close to empty, I will switch it over to watch the miles left and you can take it to 0. It doesn't cut out at some lower value. Some cars will do that so it makes it so you can't try and take it right to the end. But, these cars actually have about a gallon or so after it says 0 (car has a 16 gallon tank and even taking it to 0, I have only been able to put 14.5 gallons into it at best).
