Default Fuel Range

I have a bad habit (especially at $4 a gallon) of waiting until the last minute to fill up. I usually watch the "RANGE" function on the trip computer towards the end of a tank. The low fuel light usually goes on around 25-30 miles left.

Anyway, today I really pushed it and it got down to 11 miles before I filled up. So, I was wondering...How low have you gone? Has anyone ever ran out of gas? Is that reading fairly accurate?

I do the same thing i usually fill up when the range gets down to around 10 miles to empty but I've driven about5 milesafter the range said 0 miles to empty and there wasnt any sign that the car was going to run out.

If you continuallly keep running your cars below quarter mark to the fuel tank hence you will have to replace your fuel pump .

there is a 2 gallon reserve in the tank. so when it says 0 miles you have about 30-40 miles left.

I have gotten as low as 10 miles left but after reading about possibly damaging your fuel pump, I have been trying to refuel at about 1/4 tank. Its not worth it!

When you consider that the fuel tank has to be removed to replace the pumps, plus the cost of the pumps, gets a little expensive. I have never seen one yet though that just burned up from running it low. I have driven customer cars showing 0 miles for about 15 miles and then got some splutter on a right hand turn. That was the end of that test drive.

so in other words the range will read 0 and you still have about 15 miles left. That is good to know. Not that I want to try it!
