Default Gear Shifter

Hello everyone my name is Jeff and I'm new to the forum. I have a 2005 Jaguar X Type with AWD and a 3.0l engine. My problem is that I took off the top part of the gear shift lever today and after I put it back together it will no longer start or go into any other gear unless I hold down the little lever on the silver switch in there. Any suggestions. Thank You

Well I just put a test light on both sides of the silver switch, or solenoid in the gear shift lever compartment. Got current at both sides so I checked the brake light switch and my brake lights are working fine. I tried to start the car in neutral and also while wobbling the shift lever around but with no luck. I just don't get it, all I did was unscrew the top 4 screws and lift up the part that has the P,R,N,D and push the 2 wires on the switch to make sure they were snug and now I can't even get the car to crank over. UGGHH
