Default Gearbox fault msg

My 2003 x-type v6 is displaying gearbox fault message and cruise control unavailable.
The codes I got are P1647, P0706, and P1000.
I was driving when I seen msg. Car seemed fine but I did seem to lose a little power. Engine light is on. Thank you!

P1647 JAGUAR - HO2 Sensor Control Malfunction Bank 2 Upstream.
  • OBD II P0706
Fault Code Definition
  • Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
What does this mean?

The purpose of the automatic transmission is to match the engine's optimum power and torque characteristics to the driver's desired rate of acceleration and speed by auto-selecting different gear ratios or 'speeds' to power the wheels. The Transmission Range Sensor (also referred to as the PRNDL input and/or neutral safety switch) tells the transmission control module (TCM) and the powertrain control module (PCM) that the transmission is in park, reverse, neutral, drive, low, 2nd, 3rd etc. It is attached directly to the manual valve of transmission, so when the shift lever is moved say from park to drive, the Transmission Range Sensor communicates this critical information to the above mentioned vehicle computer systems.

Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light will illuminate
  • Vehicle may not shift properly
  • Vehicle may not go into gear
  • Decrease in fuel economy
  • In unusual cases, there are no adverse conditions noticed by the driver
  • In some cases, there may be performance problems
Common Problems That Trigger the P0706 Code
  • Defective Transmission Range Sensor (PRNDL input)
  • Defective Transmission Range Sensor (PRNDL input) wiring or connector
  • Defective Valve Body
  • Defective manual shift valve linkage
  • Dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages
Common Misdiagnoses
  • Engine Misfire problem
  • Driveline problem
Polluting Gases Expelled
  • HCs (Hydrocarbons): Unburned droplets of raw fuel that smell, affect breathing, and contribute to smog
  • CO (Carbon Monoxide): Partially burned fuel that is an odorless and deadly poisonous gas
  • NOX (Oxides of Nitrogen): One of the two ingredients that, when exposed to sunlight, cause smog.
This last part explains the p1647 code.

GOD Bless you Dell Gailey for responding so quickly.. I will show this to my husband so he can fix my car. I'm pretty sure it's the gear linkage but what do I know... Plenty, that's what I know! LOL Sometimes when I put it in Park, it goes in Reverse. Thanks again. I will keep you updated as soon as it's fixed. Have a very Blessed day.

First thing I would try is resetting the J-Gate. Then check linkage, then wiring, then the (PRNDL) sensor by the J-Gate, lastly fluid replace (see my thread on how w/pics). Least likely is internal transmission failure.

Gloria,

You don't yet have sufficient posts to be able to open or download linked files from the forum. I've sent Dell Gailey's PDF to the eMail address you used to register with the forum.

Graham

The X TYPE transmission does not have a dipstick to check level. They profess it to be a "sealed for life" unit (as with the transfer case). As owners we have developed ways to change the fluids (as no fluid can indefinitely serve it's lubrication purpose). The Jaguar official way to check level is pretty involved. You can read about it in the following thread. Make sure to understand WHICH is the level plug and WHICH IS THE REVERSE BAND PLUG. Mistaking this will bugger your transmission. I chose a different reasoning and did not touch either of the plugs. This is how I changed mine (w/pics). You should read the entire thread for guidance and thoughtful discussion.

HEED POST #32!

Yes, engineers (should) rule the world. I'm just a finance guy with a hobby...
