Default Glow Plug Warning Light

Just took the Jaguar (X-type, diesel) out for a drive and 20 minutes in, the glow plug warning started flashing and the engine lost power. I drove on for another 10 minutes and pulled in to a car park (good old Lidl's) and tried to ring the breakdown services. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a phone signal so resolved to try to limp home - another 10 minutes away.

Engine started first time, no glow plug light flashing and got home on what seemed like full power again.
Three days ago I gave the car a really good wash & wax that involved throwing buckets of water over the car, mostly from the front. I know that the car never used to like the wet and I had problems about 6 years back driving through absolutely torrential rain in France when the engine started to cut out. Since then, it's been perfect.
Could my overzealous use of buckets of water be the cause of my problem and should I be concerned about taking the car out again - I note that the manual states the flashing light also acts as an engine malfunction warning?
Many thanks.
