All you need is the parts Dennis listed and something to clean it a little. No covers or anything to be removed. It did work for me but I understand it has not helped others.
Good Luck.

One other thing to note is that you may or may not have the 'notches' as described. Mine didn't have any notches which made it difficult to nearly impossible to put the needle in anywhere. Either that or I am just blind.

Thank you, I got nothing to lose, so it's a worth of trying. It only whines at cold temp like -8c or colder and only when driving 35-40km/h. After few minutes of driving the noise will disappear so it's not a big deal if I don't get it away.

You are correct, my `04 3.0L does not have the notches like the pictures in the tutorial show. There is an orange rubber seal that I was able to get the needle under and get a fair amount of grease into, but I noted that no grease came out the front side which tells me I'm probably not reaching the cavity where the bearings are actually located.

Default Thanks for all the great picts.

I will have to try this. I think my prop shaft is needing replacement. So this can't hurt. There is a lag in lower speed range. Some times a thump as the shaft ketches up.

Default 2003 jagaur x-type may not have this probem

I copied the following words for reference
"Hi Tom,
Does the vehicle sound like an aircraft coming in for a landing?
My dealership told me that this is a problem with a 'part' of the drive shaft. It is NOT a safety issue. Your dealer/service dept needs to order a new part for your wife's car and replace it. As I understand it, Jaguar is well aware of the problem. This was a problem with the 2002 X-Types but went away with the 2003 models. It returned with the 2004 and models thereafter....You will not be able to reproduce the noise unless it is sub-freezing outside... Good Luck! Nancy"

This is kinda dumb but I am having so much trouble finding a 18 Gauge Grease Injection Needle. Called Pep Boys, no dice, Sears says they can order it, Harbor Freight didn't have one, I'll try Ace Hardware tomorrow.

Pep Boys has a grease gun needle but it's about double the diameter of the needle used here in the photos so I didn't get it. I borrowed a coworkers grease gun this weekend and I want to return it on Monday so I don't want to order a needle online.

What I did run into in the grease gun section of stores are little ball joint looking fittings that go on the end of the grease gun horse. Are there any other places under the X-Type that I can hit with these seemingly standard fittings? I guess I'm talking about lubing the chassis, which I've never done, but I have a grease gun for the weekend and I want to make good use of it!

BTW, I don't hear whining from the Prop-Shaft, I just want to do this for good measure. I've found a lot of inexpensive preventive maintenance things to do to my car on the Jaguar Forums.

Hi everyone. How do you access the bearing? Can I do it in my garage? Just jack up one side of the car and lie down under it?

ChelseaFC2014, that would work if you can lay yourself flat enough to the ground. The bearing is under the center of the car. I found it easiest to put all four corners up on jackstands. Not only does it give you more room to work, but, with the tires off the ground, you can rotate the prop-shaft for better access with the grease gun.

I did this today and it worked for me. The airplane noise is barely audible now. Thanks everyone.

So would it be safe to assume that if it's the rubber surrounding the bearing and not the bearing itself driving it as is will be ok as long as I can live with the noise ?

Hello All... my prop shaft bearing started to whine a few weeks ago... not happy as a Jaguar dealer replaced the shaft and bearing 12k miles ago and its happening again.... going to try greasing it

My question is this.... does whining indicate it will fail or is it just a really annoying noise?

More annoying than anything. Surprised the noise came back so soon. When I originally had mine replaced was shortly after I got my car in late 2008 when it was still under warranty. Then towards the end of winter in 2015 it started to make a slight sound when it was pretty cold-probably close to 0 degrees.

Are you sure it is that propshaft noise where it is pretty much between 28-32 miles an hour when it comes up instead of something else? Just seems way too soon to happen again if the dealer replaced yours with a new propshaft. If it is the same issue maybe they would still warranty it if within a year.
