Harmonic Dampners
Hi guys, jsut starting to go through process of checking valve shims and clearances, as nasty tapping noise is present as engine warms up (no loss of power tho, so dont think its the tappets) - reading Buck32's blog ( http://jagmotorproject.blogspot.com/...6-at-core.html ), and not sure where the harmonic pulley is!!! Just tring to sort out the firing sequence at the mo before going any further! Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers Si

Harmonic pulley or balancer is the thick round disc at the front of the engine, connected directly to the crankshaft. I am pretty confident it has nothing to do with your ticking noises; unless there is a belt driven noise involved. Sounds like the noises you are looking for are going to be chain driven. g.
thanks Gordon - thought it was but I wanted to make sure!!!
Re chain driven noises, that was the initial thought - have already changed timing chains, etc, (RH bank was flopping around like a loose womans bits!!) put engine back in car, and tapping noise came back as engine warmed up (fine when cold!). Only reason I needed harmonic dampner was to find the TDC timing mark on it, to sort out the firing sequence, as the JTIS is known to be wrong on this for the X-Type - need to check the shim distances, etc, so wanted the firing sequence for ref both now and later on! Many thanks tho - much appreciated,
