Have you ever put the pedal down from a complete stop?

Have you ever put the pedal down from a complete stop?
Ever floor your jag from a dead stop? If so, what happened? Were you surprised? Disappointed? Did the car leave a trail of nuts and bolts?
I have yet to press the pedal down over 50% because of the transmission horror stories on this board, so I can only guess what the car would do. Would the tires break lose from the pavement?

harryc, I have done it a few times. Does the car leap forward like a sports car should? No, not really, but then, I have to keep in mind that the 03 only has 200 hp, so, what are you expecting? The tranny held the gear pretty much to near red line and then found the next gear and kept on going. Now, do I do this day in and day out. By no means. But, I do know that the car will handle it just fine. Where people normally have problems is when they do this over and over and over.
As for the tires breaking loose on pavement, if it is dry, no way it will happen. There isn't enough power to do that. Even on wet pavement would I expect to have all 4 tires break loose. The only time I have broken all 4 wheels loose is on ice. Even then you have to try. But then, if you know you are on ice, you are not going to goose the car. I was doing it simply to play around as the town was pretty much shut down and no one else was on a 4 lane road.

Mine's a manual 2.5L. I regularly floor it and run it to the rev limiter. 105,000 miles of abuse and it still runs perfectly. Car runs a 16.7 second quarter mile at 86.43MPH. 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. Not exactly fast. In fact, only slightly faster than a Prius. The engine's quite small, with tiny internal parts. 7000RPM is nothing for an engine this size.

Yes, earlier this year we were on a drive out of town on straight and clear roads and I hit it twice a few miles apart. It performed almost identical each time and made each shift at 6500rpm. I backed off when it shifted to 5th @ roughly 90mph. I routinely use around 50% throttle leaving traffic lights, I used to baby it to get best gas mileage but now with the Mina exhaust I like to hear it purr. I also use the J-Stick in traffic to slow down. Here a couple of winters ago I also hit the throttle hard but not full maybe 50% on glare ice on a curve close to our home and all it did was accelerate without any hint of wheel spin. I think it performs pretty good for a small displacement engine touring car.

Only when I want to show off to a passenger. 4.2L XKR. I start out by telling them to put the back of their heads against the headrest. There's absolutely no reason to have a car that goes from 0 - 60 in 5.14 seconds, if you don't occasionally go from 0 - 60 in 5.14 seconds, I think.
BTW, I'm pretty sure the "instant mileage counter" goes negative while performing this maneuver.

My '07 with the 3.0 likes 2K rpm's plus. Once the engine get over 2 grand you can feel the torque. In high gear slow the car down as much as you can without it down shifting maybe 35 mph. Now step on it. Not to the floor! Watch the Tach and right about 2K you'll feel it start to pull. Jack

It Goes!
Having Travelled 5,000 miles in two weeks in the Northern States and Canada, I can say this car goes! 110 kph - 150 kph quickly, it accelerates smoothly. Hitting the top range - I know it does better - it just gets there! Dark Highways, Light highways, little passing. Just wanted to visit family and get home.
Love the GROWL at those speeds, and being sucked into those loveable leather seats.
By the Way I did get 38.6 mpg according to the car computer. Couldn't believe the trip odometer (great mileage), but flatter highways would do this.
Aside from the passing acceleration occasional bump (mentioned in another thread), the car goes like snot - hope this does not break any rules on this site (snot)- .
I have taken my cars to the system preset fuel cut off speeds (usually around 220 - 240 kph) numerous times - on my track, but not yet with my x-type- i will soon to see where she goes.
Approach your beastie girl (x-type) with love, take great care of her, and let her show you the raw power she has when you truly need it.
Another post, another day.

Rarely.
My 2005 3.0 X-type isn't as quick off the line as I had expected really. It almost feels like something is holding it back (traction control?) because once it's moving it suddenly kicks in much harder. It'll scoot well enough to give other V6's a run for their money. Off the line I almost feel like my 4 cylinder responds quicker. *shrug* Otherwise I try not to abuse her. I want her to stick around for a while!

My 04 3.0 X (manual) isn't quite as snappy off the line as I would like (My wife's PT Cruiser will take the lead for the first 100 feet or so), but by the time you hit 2nd or 3rd gear it really starts to hold it's own. The car really starts to shine once you hit 70 or 80 MPH and can take the twist and turn without slowing down even the slightest bit. In my opinion AWD cars are not 0-60 cars but 30-90 and handles what ever driving conditions mother nature decides to throw at you.
