Default Head Gaskets

My 2003 Jaguar X-Type ran hot on my sister. She must have drove it while it was hot. I say this because water now sits on top of the motor where the pistons are located. Well the mechanic said that I could loosen the spark plugs and the water would come off the top of the motor. I want to know have anyone tried this method before. Also what is the worst possibly scenario that could happen if I try this method.
