Head Unit issues please help
Can someone help me please, I have a 2002 X-Type sport with the full sat nav touch screen but I am now down to only one rear speaker working. Have checked all the obvious settings/balances etc its looks like the others have just died. When the jag was in for a service not too long ago I montioned this to them and they said 'Sounds like the head unit channels have gone' unless you have 5k to replace the entire unit I would just learn to live with the one speaker...is this right?

Sounds like bull to me Ross. The X-type speakers generally go out with each other. I would start by replacing them. Not with factory ones mind you. For half the price and twice the quality you can get a set at best buy or the like.
The head unit puts the sound out to the amp in the rear. The amp then outputs to the speakers. The amp will normally work or not. So if you have sound from one speaker, replace the speakers.
And the head unit for nav vehicles is indeed 5g's. If that ever goes, I would start looking at junkyards first.

^ above, and if you still don't have sound after replacing the speakers, it should be just a matter of replacing the amplifier, again...I recommend a brand other than JAGUAR, which should be easily replaced at any car audio shop, and at a much lower cost. I don't think there is any funny wiring like 'fiber optic' to worry about in your X.

I actually had the same problem in my 2002 x-type. My drivers side rear speaker stopped working completly. I went to Best Buy, got a pair of new speakers for the front [Alpine Type S] for $120 and a pair for the back [Alpine Type S as well] for $140. They were pretty easy to install and there are a ton of threads on these forums with detailed instructions.
Everything works fine now and the sound qualities pretty good.

There are certainly much better ways to diagnose the system than what the dealer did.
To diagnose a blown speaker, you need to take off the door panel, remove the speaker, and connect a known good speaker to it (even a house one for a test will work) just use a length of wire and hold the wires to the connector with the radio on. Dont let the wires touch each other of course.
I really cant believe that the dealer wants to sell you a new NAV unit.
If I had the time, I would take the door panels off, mark the speakers with a permanent marker. Also take the nav unit out of the dash and mark the back of it.
Have them do the suposed 5k repair.... and catch them red handed at screwing you......
Of course they wont call you a good customer anymore hahahahah.....

Thank you all very much for your quick responses...summarising what you all said, I agree with what you said, it should either all work or all not work in the case of the amp etc. Another suggestion posted below is to replace the speakers I think this is probably the best starting point especially as if I take it in I will get charged for them to test it...may as well spend that on the speakers first.
Thanks again great advice.

My headunit is skipping. I don't have nav. Dealer told me that radio is considered a "throw away" part. So a new one would be $400 and I should just learn to put up with a skipping cd player. Used a cd lens cleaner and it did nothing. It also tends to start skipping more on bumps/pot holes. Anyone know what could be up?
I did a cheap fix by getting a itrip for my ipod for $30.
But replace the speakers and let us know if they work. You may have just blown out your speakers. Don't get really nice speakers unless you are upgrading your amp also because they are overkill then if not powered correctly.
