Default Headlight self level explanation needed/Buck MR2

Hi Guys/Gals,
My 2001 2.5 petrol x type failed uk MOT due to headlights being too low.
I have looked at the threads on here and have gleaned some info, but I am still a little confused.
First of all I dont think I have HID as I have level adjuster on dash and no headlight washers,no mods have been done to lights either.
I have read that the leveling posts inside the unit are prone to breaking, however it seems strange that both sides have gone . The manual adjusters along the top of the front which have plastic Hex screws do not seem to move anything. there are 4 of these, 2 each side, does each one have it's own leveling post ? again seems odd if 4 have all gone at the same time.
I plan to take bumper off tomorrow to have a better look ,but any advice upfront would be great.
BuckMr2 ,Hi , I remember you from another forum when you had a Maroon 3.0l x type , you gave me some great advice on another problem, hope you can do the same here.
Thank you in anticipation.

There are circular covers behind both Main Beam lamps, remove them and see if you can rock the inner lamp assemblies up and down with your fingers. If you can, they are broken internally. They should move very little if they are still intact.

Cheers,
