Default Heater / Blower cabin fan turns on randomly when car is shut down

Hey guys, so ANOTHER fan problem with my 2002 Jaguar X-Type (2.5 Automatic)

So last Thursday after work, I opened the car to my door and found that the blower fan was on full-blast (without any key in the ignition OR any sort of power to the instrument panel). I replaced the fan relay (F6 underneath the hood), and for 48 hours, thought I had fixed it. However I opened the door this morning and the fans were on again.

This leads me to being a climate control module issue and/or a computer issue. So I started reading codes... only problem is, it isn’t throwing any.

This is where I get nervous about the computer being bad. I have a Carsoft Jaguar/Land Rover specific scanner that is able to view live data... when I pull up the data specific to the Climate Control system, mostly everything is reading properly EXCEPT two things.

1) The “demanded temperature” stays at 72 no matter what (Auto is off, and I always have it set to 68 and below)

2) The “blower relay switch” reads correctly as “on”, but the “blower fan” incorrectly reads as “off”. This is where I think the main issue is.

So my question is, are these symptoms of a ECM failure, or just a Climate Control Module failure? Asking for any help , thanks!

It goes without saying, but I'm sure you have checked the fuses?

I'd check the interior temperature air sensor just for giggles. It's the one behind the little vent grill just below ignition (LHD). Carefully pop it out, use small, short bursts of compressed air to blow out the crud that accumulates. You CAN (but be mightily careful) use cotton swabs with alcohol to (again CAREFULLY) clean the inside using sufficient light to see the interior.

S type, but same procedure =

Checked the relay (R2 in cabin) and both fuses (F80 in cabin & F6 in bay). I had replacement fuses so I replaced those right away, but didn’t seem to fix anything. However, I had to order a replacement relay and will be here on Wednesday.

I think this almost confirms my suspicion of a computer issue. After the ignition is turned off, it takes 3 minutes 10 seconds exactly, for the blower fan to turn on. It will stay on for 11 minutes, every time, and turn off for 1 minute... then finally back on for another 11 minutes (repeat)

My plan for tomorrow is to trace what instrument is sending the on signal. I’m going to disconnect the Climate Control Unit from the instrument panel and test to see if the blower still turns on. If it still turns on, I’m going to have to disconnect the ECM, which I am not looking forward to at all. If anyone knows any other computer that could be malfunctioning in the car, it would be great to know!

I think I fixed it! I waited patiently for my Relay to be delivered, and it seems like it payed off. Of course it’s always THE LAST circuit interrupter you check. Thanks Dell Gailey for your help!

Glad it was just a relay.

I think there was a total of 2 fuses and 1 relay I checked. You have to look up the fuse diagram online to figure out which ones they are. I think there was like 1 fuse under the hood, and all others were inside the cabin.
This was for an X-Type though, I don’t think an X-Type has a fuse box in the ‘boot’ (thank god I watched the UK Top Gear 😂 )
