Default Help removing steering shroud

Hi
I'm having a problem with my 2005 X-Type 3.0 I hope you guys can help me with. The key is currently stuck in the ignition and will not turn back to the off position. In order to get my car to stop, I had to pull the ignition fuse.

I'd like to pull out the ignition barrel and either get my key out or replace the ignition. So I need to remove the steering shroud which is held in place by 3 torx bolts. The two in the front are easy to access, but the third is blocked by the knee air bag panel.

Has anyone been able to remove that third torx bolt without removing the knee air bag panel? If not, any tips on removing the knee air bag panel? There are two bolts at the bottom which I removed, but I still can't pry it loose.

Thanks for any help.

To access it you need to remove the lower dash panel. I think I remember it just prying it forward and off. One pin at each corner and one in upper center next to steering column.

It took me a minute but here is a picture of the lower shroud.

Hi TV Phil

Id say avern1 is correct, the lower shroud is only held in with spring 4 clips each corner, just carefully give them a tug. I've always got mine on and off although UK is opposite side, the same principal applies. You'll probably have to take your lower cover for the footwell out too that's held in with a couple of phillips head plastic push pins

good luck

Thanks avern1 one Hex Type for your responses above. I was finally able to get back on this project today.

It turns out my lower dash was held on in a different manner than expected (maybe because I have a knee airbag). There were two upper torx screws exposed by pulling back on the panel, and two lower torx screws as well. In addition toward the top were two fasteners that were held in by spring clips that I was clued in on by this post.I had to pull back on a bracket and push against the spring with a flat head screwdriver while pulling out on the panel. I've attached some photos below in case anyone else runs into this issue.

The fastener in the foreground was held in by a spring clip behind the bracket.

By pulling back on the bracket I was able to push the spring clip to the side to release the fastener.

After that I was able to remove the lower dash panel and access the third screw in the steering column shroud. And I was able to remove the top half of the shroud, but unfortunately not the bottom half. I need to remove the bottom half so that I can hopefully expose the pin on the ignition barrel that will allow me to remove the barrel. I can't get the lower shroud around my stuck key.

Key is blocking removal of lower shroud.

Any ideas on what to do here? I'm contemplating cutting the key off at the barrel, or even slicing the shroud there so that I can get it around the key.

Thanks again for any help you can offer.

I was able to get the lower shroud off by removing the key from the key fob. I pried the key fob apart with a screwdriver, and then was able to get the shroud around the body of the key.

Glad you got to it. I was going to suggest weigh up the availability of parts and the cost to replace then when deciding what to damage accessing the key shroud etc.
Also the key head has a chip that the car wont function without programming into the entire locking system, its an expensive, specialised job and not to be confused with simply reprogramming the fob I'm lead to believe, although my local Timpson's guy recons he can do it for £30, but Ill believe it when I see it.

Thanks. I thought I was in the home stretch, but unfortunately I still can't get the barrel out.

I think the release pin is either jammed, or the barrel has rotated such that the release pin isn't lined up with the hole. I've tried jamming a small allen wrench and a pick into the hole, but I can't feel it being depressed.

I may have to throw into the towel and bring it to the dealer.

Hmm... Mine was a torx screw. I really don't recognize what type of screw head that is on your car.

Looks like a security female e-torx. Easy to find sets nearly anywhere.
