Default High Coolant Temperature

Hi all,
Im facing the following problem with my 2.5 X-Type.
Engine has 125.000 kms, regularly serviced and maintained. The last months I was watching the coolant temperature and I saw that is working at around 95°C at 30°C ambient temperature, during city driving.
As the ambient temperature is rising (36° today) the coolant temperature went up to 106°C for a few seconds, during mixed driving (city and highway) with a/c on.
Both fans are working fine. I have replaced a few days ago the thermostat and the water pump was replaced last February.
Any ideas please 🙏

I found an older thread for you:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-crazy-96901/

It was too long for me to read it all, but there are some ideas in there. One idea is a sludge-blockade requiring a total flush.
There are a lot of posts from Thermo in that thread. He has good ideas.

Thanks so lot Peter.
I really dont know what else to do.
I read the post you mention several times and I have tried almost everything.
The cooling system has been flushed at March "professionaly" but aldo by me two weeks ago.
Both times the coolant was clean without slug. The car "behaviour" is according the factory. Both fans are operating at the correct temperature, the thermostat is new and good, the water pump is also new. I'm really confused.

Then there are only 2 things, I do have in the back of my head - things I heard once, but don't know enough about - so hopefully others can add information about that:
1. I think I heard that it is possible for air to get trapped in the coolant circuit (and obviously the water-pump does not pump air). Thus this could be one explanation.
2. I also seem to remember that someone else was worried about those high temperatures, and I think the answer was, that this is kind of normal. So hopefully, someone here can tell us, which temperatures are normal...

Yes, the thermostat is new and tested before installation.

Hi strastig,

We had a similar problem after replacing the cooling water pump. As Peter already wrote, bleeding is a bit difficult. Ultimately, however, it was the new thermostat that wasn't working properly because it wasn't installed correctly. When fitting it, you have to make sure that the thermostat sits properly in the groove with the seal and that the cover is put on straight. At the end, we glued it in carefully with sealing compound to prevent it from slipping. That then worked.

Thanks a lot.
I'll check the thermostat but I'm sure it's in.the right position.

Checking over Jaguar's own description of how the cooling system is meant to work, it doesn't seem as though stratisg, the OP, is far off the right parameters for the fans with all the temperatures he gives.

That's confirmation of "point 2.", which I made above, which was that I had in mind that temps of 95°C and 110°C are kind of normal. Jaguar's description above says that the fans operate at slow speed @ 95°C and high speed @ 105°C, which puts your coolant temps into the range of "normal".

Thanks a lot Peter,
I tested the car yesterday. With 34°C ambient temperature, driving around the city but mostly in highway the max coolant temperature went up to 101° and fall down to 97° really quickly. It seems that works this way 😀
Thanks a lot Peter.

...but if you are of the opinion that your cooling fan module is buggered, this might interest you:
I just stumbled over a listing on aliexpress, which offers for AU$29.79:
940009402 940004000 4526899 Cooling Fan Control Module for Jaguar X Type Land Rover 4 Pins Cooling Fan Control Unit Module

...and another listing for AU$18.49:
For JAGUAR X TYPE LAND ROVER 4 PINS COOLING FAN CONTROL UNIT MODULE 940009402 940004000 4526899

As I wrote: I just spotted those on aliexpress. So, no, I have not tried them. Obviously, before buying anything anywhere, one has to compare at least, if the offered part - with a description suggesting that it is right for your car- looks exactly like your part. But I bought already quite a few parts from Aliexpress - including knock-sensors, which were priced there 10 times cheaper than elsewhere - and I did not have problems with those parts.
