how to check your radiator fans work
i recently bought my 4th x type.
i had put a few thousand miles on it and everything appeared to be just fair dinkum with normal day to day driving around town and long interstate trips, a few traffic jams came and went without issue.
until it wasn't
while on a road trip i filled up with petrol at a servo and decided to stop for a rather volumous "meal" utilizing a drive thru fast food "restaurant" yes, i know that was a bad idea but i was starvin like marvin and decided it was better to eat that slop sitting in my car in the parking lot, rather than attempting to eat a slop burger while driving on the interstate.
well bugger me me 'ole mate but me thermo pin started rising to the almighty bloody sky.
i decided god was punishing me for abusing me temple so i threw it in the trash and decided to head for the hills sharpish to bring me old temp down.
lucky puppy it worked and i was on me jolly ole way again with a normal temp.
the moral of the story is this.
you may think your fan module works just dandy coz its always almost in the middlepiddle.
but lemme tell yaz, y'all ought to sit in the driveway and idle yer ole pippitypip motor for a good 14-16 minutes to just make sure ya dont get all overheated next time you wanna eat a burger in yer car and not freeze yertitties off with the engine running, in park, with the heat on!.

The real test for your fans is an easy one to do. With the car ice cold (having not run for 12+ hours), start the car up with all electrical off and then pop the bonnet/hood. Turn the A/C on MAX (dial the temp as low as it will go) and then set the fan to max speed. This will force the fans to run at maximum speed. Now, step out of the car and open the hood/bonnet and lean in over the radiator slightly, like you would be checking the air box. Does your hair gently waft in the air or is it standing on end because of a hurricane? You should have a nice strong blowing coming from the fans. If you are getting this nice summer breeze, then you need to start looking at what you need to do to fix your fans. From what I have seen, the fans normally do not go from full blast to nothing. They loose speed over time and finally reach a point that they can't keep up with what is asked of them (as you found out sitting still with the car running). Driving down the highway moves a ton of air through the engine bay and this for most situations will keep the motor cool even if your fans are not working at all. Now, pull off of the highway into stop and go traffic, you will see the temp gauge climb.
