Default Howling - not because it's Halloween

2004 X-type 3.0 sport, 57,000 miles (91,200km).

Only 2 problems with this car up to this date have been ignition tumbler replaced and that annoying rattling vent trim on the dash top (not fixed yet).

Todays new problem...
Howling , resonating sound from rear of car
-Only Between 72-75 mph (115-120 kmh).
-It happens both accellerating and decelerating.
-No vibration.
-Still occurs (decelerating) when car is in neutral.
-I've noted the engine rpm during the indicated speeds and have put the car in neutral, then matched rpms to see if one of the mufflers might have a hole - symptom is not replicated.

I can think of a few possible culprits:
A. Rearend input bearing from driveshaft
B. Axle bearing
C. Wheel Bearing
D. Something inside the rearend
E. Tires - they only have 5,000 miles (8,000km) on them

Thanks in advance folks!

I knew I had heard of this before. Perhaps this is what you are looking for. Although it appears fairly specific to `02 MY only.

Re-try, down a couple posts.

Mohr, will you do me a favor, and clean up the 'random' shifting of the image links, and if you have a stable image, insert/attach it, or find a image hosting site to do it for you?

It appears the images were linked to alldata, and i'm assuming it's a security protocol to keep the information proprietary to their system/software, and if we want to use any images as exhibits here, we need to screen capture them before posting.

Yikes I'm stealing! Never knew it would shift things around, I guess they don't want me sharing. Try this and I'll edit out the other. If this doesn't work. Sorry, I don't know how else to post it.

Drivetrain - Rear Differential Whine Noise XT205-01
X-TYPE
DATE 08/01
MODEL
2002 MY-ON
X-TYPE VIN
C00001-ON Whine on Deceleration at 112 Km/h/(70 MPH) - Rear Differential - Add Weight to Differential Bracket
Issue:
Some 2002 MY X-TYPE vehicles may experience a whining noise from the differential on deceleration at speeds of around 112 Km/h/70 mph. This bulletin provides a procedure to "retune" the differential mounting bracket by adding mass (weight) to it.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of the above condition on a 2002 MY X-TYPE remove and retune the differential mounting bracket as outlined in the following procedure.
MODIFICATION PROCEDURE
1. Raise vehicle. 2. Remove rear wheels and tires. 3. Remove the rear differential. Refer to JTIS, section: 205-02 SRO 51.25.13. 4. Remove the rear sub frame from the vehicle. Refer to JTIS, section: 502-00 SRO 64.25.01.90. 5. Remove the differential mounting bracket to rear sub frame securing bolts. 6. Remove the differential mounting bracket from the rear sub frame assembly 7. Clean outer ends of the differential mounting bracket with cleaning fluid.

8. Cut the two 120 g strips of wheel weights into four 60 g strips, remove backing tape and apply wheel weights to the differential mounting bracket

(Illustration 1). Note: Firmly push along the full length of the wheel weight strips to ensure good adhesion to the differential mounting bracket. 9. Reinstall the differential mounting bracket to the rear sub frame. 10. Install the securing bolts for the differential mounting bracket. Torque figure 106 Nm. 11. Reinstall the rear sub frame to vehicle. Refer to JTIS, section: 502-00. 12. Reinstall the rear differential. Refer to JTIS, section: 205-02 SRO 51.25.13. 13. Perform the under body misalignment check in JTIS, section 502-00 SRO 64.25.01.90. 14. Reinstall rear wheel and tire assemblies. 15. Lower vehicle.

lol. images are still rotating around... Instructions are good, but i'm afraid don't count on the pictures you'll end up putting wheel weights where they don't belong.

Mohr, if you screen capture the images, crop them, and reattach, that may work equally well. Location of the placement may be critical to the repair's success.

Excellent!!!

A picture is definately worth a thousand words.

Do you really have to rip half the car apart to slap the weights on?
I'm hoping this project might be more like a bit of cleaner on a rag and reach up above the rearend when the car is on the rack.

Let you know how it turns out.

Thanks a bunch mohrd.
