I am purchasing a 2003 X-type with just over 100k.

manual or automatic?
I just bought a little over a week ago (also an '03) and was just shy of 100K miles. Rolled over 100K yesterday morning (already put about 750 miles on it).
Tires are practically antique from some sitting it had done...date codes suggest fronts were replaced sometime in 2006 and the rears sometime in 2007, so new tires are on order, as are the shocks.
Mechanically, however, it felt sound...mileage in and of itself doesn't scare me off of a vehicle.
There are several good threads here on things to look for.

Mine did the same thing (would not rev above 3k rpm's), turns out the knock sensor was bad. Looks like it's a pretty common problem and it's located under the intake manifold. Did it myself (paid $26) for the sensor, and it took me about 3 hours to change out. (had to remove intake, injectors, fuel rail, lower intake, then unbolt one of the two bolts on the coolant pipe that covers the knock sensor bolt and slide it out of the way, and then swapped out the part. Not super hard job, but not simple either and if that's the problem I'd absolutely recommend changing the upper and lower intake gaskets as well.
Here is a great post on what the job is like:

Any auto parts store can pull the codes for you for free and that should be able to point you in the right direction.
Good luck!

I would be sure it's in good condition. There is a big difference between an x-type with 100,000 miles that's in good condition and well taken care of and one that isn't. Repairs are expensive unless you do it yourself, even tune ups are expensive because of the labor involved. They require good parts, so the best way to do it is to do it yourself if you are up for the challenge. Although you can find them relatively cheap, they're not an economy car. If things go wrong they still cost Jaguar prices to get fixed.

Hi Rob,
with the V6, you should have the engine related details on your insurance, 500cc will affect the price you pay!!
There is actually little differnece on output or MPG just a little more from the 3.0L but I have the 2.5 and shes great!!
I would source an OBD II scanner if I were you as you can analyse the faults yourself and fix them a damn sight cheaper than the garage!!
Youll find lots of great info here, GOOD LUCK!!
