Transfers power to the wheels...or rather (only found in 4wd or awd) it takes power from the tranny and sends power to the 2 axles through gears...hmmm...let see what could I compare it to? It gives power to the driveshafts or through driveshafts turning gears to power the wheels to spin...I'm sure I'll be corrected with a better explanation...kind of like traction control our jags have...or rather dynamic stability control!

Hanky I just re-read your post were you serious or do you know what the transfer case is?

Hello Aquill,

no i was serious. I really didn't know what the transfer case is. I appreciate your thorough explanation and great picture as well.

do you have to change the fluids on the transfer case just like the transmission? how do you check for fluid levels?

Is the transfer case like the differential?

Not sure...I'd think we'd have both or its the same...the differential is what sends the power to our front/rear axles...and allows the shaft to drive the other 2 shafts...hmmm...anyone else help us...the more I think about it the more confused I get...

differential is the place your axles come out of. transfer case is where tranny sends the power and then transfers 40%to front diff and 60% to rear, if I read the jag stuff properly

so .. again, what exactly would cause the transfer case, differentials, driveshafts to fail/break/explode/die, etc ... ?

Fluid leak. There is little fluid to start; with a leak you wear out parts of the xfer case quickly leading to failure.

Wouldn't the engineering of the drivetrain also cause it to be weak? Especially when our cars have nowhere near the power a stock evo lancer has and its awd? I say something jag did made this weak...perhaps not knowing a lot about it when planning to use awd on the x?

make sure you have a transfer case cooling duct. they brake off or people dont put them back when they do oil changes.

Oil changes for the transfer case...I was picturing a regular oil change!

no .. it's a curved plastic air duct that bolt's to all oil pans.. it 's about 6 inches long.. and it covers the engine drain plug.

Hey Jag Genius,

should my 2002 x-type 2.5 liter have this transfer case cooling duct as well? I remember somebody even had a picture of one on this board but I can't find it? I looked everywhere on this site?

I clearly do not have one on my jag but I would feel better if I had one. Should there be bolts on my jaguar for this cooling duct?

Thanks!
