Any key that is/was cut to start the car is all that is needed. Just make sure you hit the button on ALL the remotes you want program at the same time.

What about the 1998 XJ key? I understand the newer models require two keys in order to program a new one in the ignition, but I am not sure when this idea started. Does anyone know if the 1998 model can be programed at home, or are we stuck with the dealer? Thanks! Ben

Resurrecting an old thread.

I had two keys when I bought the car new, but lost one of them earlier this year. Now, before buying and programming a new one, I want to make sure the old one is disabled because frankly I have no clue if someone had gotten a hold of it. So how can I disable it? Please don't say dealer.

If you re-program any keys you have now, it will invalidate any other one's that have been programmed in the past. So if you get a new one, program them both together. Here's the skinny....

1.) To program a key fob insert the key and turn to position 1.

2.) Turn the key to position II and back to I (quickly repeat four times) and you will hear a chime if it was done correctly.

3.) Turn the key all the way back and take it out.

4.) Now press any button on ALL the key fobs at the same time to be added and you will hear another chime.

After reading all the threads, I can now reprogram my key fobs for my 2002 X-Type in my sleep. Now if some one would just tell me how to get the dang battery out to change it without using a large hammer I would appreciate it. Thanks.

5. If you have a set of keys for step (4) you have to press any button on two or more fobs at the same time so they both have the same code or elses one will work and the other won't.
Thanks for the steps above, it works! excellent.
When I read the post I was wondering about spending 200GBP to have my 2 sets re-programmed. I did change the battery as quickly as I could sthg like 1.5 min, but the key did not work after....
I followed the above steps and magic, it works. Thanks a lot for that.
Rgds.

Any thoughts on how this would work with a later model, where you do not insert a key ?

To summarize,

Step 1: Get some key like this

BRAND NEW UNCUT JAGUAR FLIP KEY FLIPKEY SWITCHBLADE FOB KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE | eBay

Step 2: Get it cut ( Any recommendation would be great Thanks)

Step 3: Use programming Guidelines provided here to program YOURSELF, you don't need dealer.

Correct?

I did some research about this,

I found this guy online:
Code reading "Tibbe" keys for Jaguar
Keys for Classics, specialists in code-cut keys for classic cars and motorcycles

And his ebay store,
JAGUAR XJ6 XJ12 XJS 1990-96 Tibbe KEY CUT TO YOUR CODE items in Keys4Classics store on eBay!

I have contacted him about me buying uncut keys from eBay, send it to him with pictures of current key. Waiting for his reply.

BUT quick question though, I can program the new key my self through instructions above, right ?
I have done it before when I replaced the battery of the current key. I don't want to spend $200 on this and realize I can't program it.

Thanks

What you have to realise that there are 2 lots of programming on a key. One for the remote fob and one to bypass the PATS ignition.

Anyone can program the remote fob with 1, 2 or 3 keys. This allows the key to open the door but will not start the car.

BUT you can only program a key to start the car yourself if you already have 2 that will start the car.

If you only have 1 key that will start the car then it's a trip to the dealer or an auto locksmith.

Default x type 03 key fob

I got two keys with my car. One worked the other did not. I considered the
problem to be a flat cell battery - replaced it. Then used the system explained in the posts from you guys. switch between auxiliary and open 4 times (no beep or tone) 5 times still no response. Basically I could not set up my second key. I only hope and pray that the working one lasts me out.
I must say I never expected so much bother - surely there must be a easier way ?
