Let's try this again. I have a 2002 X-type with a bad ignition lock cylinder. Only fix is to replace it. Tumblers badly worn and key is shot. Jaguar wants $1100 and I can't do that. So....suggestions? Will a cylinder from a parts car work? What about aftermarket ones? And the big question ...if these used or new come with keys will the car start or do they have to be programmed? Nearest dealer is 125 miles away. What about just having a new key cut by the dealer, would that help since the cylinder is worn?

 

loyd, I would do some calling around and seeing what your local lock smiths can do for you. The big thing that you are going to need to know is whether they can re-key the ignition tumbler to match the keys that you have right now.

With that being said, even if the keys are worn, between the VIN and looking at the old keys, a new key can be made with the proper cuts. Then all you have to do is get a good blank to have the locksmith cut for you.

Removing the tumbler is really easy. If you look at the underside of the steering column, there are 3 screws. Remove those 3 screws and remove the bottom side of the column. At that point, you will be able to see the tumbler. You will also see a small hole on the side of the tumbler facing you/steering wheel. You will need to insert a key that will allow the tumbler to rotate 1 position (to the RUN position, but do not start the car) and with the key here, you can insert a small screw driver or pick into the hole to depress the release button. As you are depressing the release button, pull the tumbler from the steering column. At this point, the locksmith will be able to do all the work he needs to. It may be advisable to disconnect the battery when you are doing this as you may have the car powered up for an hour or so as the locksmith does what he needs to. Hate to see you kill your battery.

 

Thanks for the advice. However in good old Evansville Indiana not one single locksmith will touch a Jaguar X-Type. Thus the trip to Louisville.

 

loyd, well, wish you luck then. The dealership should be able to hook you up in no time flat. Unfortunately, it is going to be an expensive run. Have you tried calling some of the local locksmiths to see if they might be able to help you out. Atleast that way you can save some money hopefully.
