Default f-type with in-line engine?

There are more and more rumors Jaguar might stop the V6 and start a 6-cylinder in-line engine for the f-type, probabely at 2017/2018.
Ever heard? Who knows more?
Stefan

I thought this was more than a rumour, more an accepted fact that they will go to a straight 6 ingenium family motor with a turbo.

Yes, that is what I have read. I'm glad I got the SC when I did. When MINI abandoned the SC in favor of the Turbo in 2007, it stripped the car of a lot of soul. (torque curve not nearly as robust and not as tunable).

That would be my concern, nothing wrong with a straight6, some of the sweetest engines in the world have been straight 6. Just look to BMW, but I have a feeling the turbo may take some of the soul out.

It's not a rotary, but I'll take it. The swap might even drop some weight.
I mean, maybe? Most I6's sound awful. Even the cool ones, like the 104, JZ's and RB's. That's the deal breaker.

V6 (2 banks of 3 configured in a V) now vs inline 6 (6 cylinders all in a row) next year or later. New engine will be longer and narrower.

The V8 will remain a V8

I think a turbo I6 will be lighter and more tunable, although I doubt it will ever be as easy to tune as a Subaru (abundant parts and open source tuning software). Still, increasing boost pressure is much easier on a turbocharger than a supercharger.

Will it sound as good? Possibly, if they design the exhaust to get the right sound.

If they do go for a turbocharged I6, I think they will get a huge challenge in making it sound as good as it does now. The turbocharger will behave as a muffler, making it hard to create a soundtrack that can match the one from a supercharged engine. Just look (and lissen) to Formula 1 now.....

Don't forget probably the sweetest of them all was the 1990-1995 inline 6 turbo in the Toyota Supra RZ.

Certainly would love the added performance of the inline 6 turbo but who coud live without that V6 supercharged snarl...... perfect solution. BUY BOTH.

I think it'll possible to get a satisfying sound with a turbocharged I6. The reduced weight and complexity would be appealing, as would improved aftermarket tunability.

I have the same concern regarding the sound. Having said that, it is hard to complain about the sound of the Mercedes C 63 AMG which is a turbo, v8 not 6 but awesome sound.
