Default instrument cluster & odometer

Hey all,

I recently had my instrument cluster replaced (with another used one). As a result, it's showing an extra 65,000 miles on the odometer then is the case.

Does anyone have any experience with this? The mechanic signed off on the paperwork and gave us the old cluster but I'm concerned this is going to be an eternal PITA (especially with my insurance haha). I know a lot of places put a sticker on the door for this kind of thing, but he didn't, and it seems that that is reserved for the odometer being reset to 0, not being over where it was before.

Any tips? (The mechanic said it could only be adjusted up, not down).

I believe it must be set via a computer (test set) like an iCarSoft. Check with a shop that can read the car’s computer. If it’s similar to Saab’s, they can set the odometer to the exact mileage.
The experts on this site can confirm.

So the mechanic is an independent jag mechanic with the right computer- that's how he was able to program the security system afaik. I've done some googling on this and it seems to be the case- even the dealerships can only move mileage up, not down, which makes sense.

Depending on where that mileage data is written to (internal memory storage of the processor IC or separate eerom IC), it might be possible to transfer the IC from your old cluster to the new one and effectively shift the data that way.

I haven't worked on one of those clusters before, so I am not positive that it is a solution...just a plausible theory.
