Default Instrument panel replace problems

Hey everyone Im glad to be on this Forum, finally feels like im upgrading in life. I just bought an 05 Jaguar x-type. I got it for a good deal, because the original owner had work done on it and from what I gather the person doing the work had no idea what he was doing. Currently the car is not running and the Instrument panel is not connected. He said I had to take it into the dealer and pay them to reset the computer or something like that... Does disconnecting the Instrument panel cause this? and is taking it to the dealer my only option?

As long as the instrument cluster sitting in the car now is the one that was in it from the factory, then all you have to do is plug it up and away you go (barring any other problems). Now, if the previous owner had gone out and got a new instrument cluster (due to a problem), then you will end up needing to get the instrument cluster flashed and coordinated with the ECM.

As for getting the instrument cluster flashed with the correct information, odds are, that is your only option. i am not familiar with any shops that would have that capability. But, you could always ask.

Any Jaguar dealer should be able to do it. My question would be why would somebody replace the intrument cluster? Thermo is the resident expert here but the only advantage I can see, failing someone actually smashed it, would be if you had an inordinate amount of mileage and you swapped for a cluster with less. Not sure though if the ECM stores the mileage.

I just got an email back from the person I bought it from, their telling me that they bought it with the orig console. The original one was clipped at the check engine light probably to hide a code, he bought it from a dealer auction and thought he could replace the console like any other car. Ill run it down to the dealer on Monday and get it flashed and synced. Thanks for help!
