Default Dash timber replacement

The timber on my dash has faded, that is ;

LH around vent
Centre console panel
Panel around Instrument cluster
RH around vent.

The glove box one hasn't but I'm guessing if I had to buy a new set , it would be best to buy that one too?

I had a quote to get them refurbed but that was $ 1000 AUS and did not include removing and refitting!

Does someone do a cost effective set of replacements?

I have some trim removal gear and would be happy to have a crack at remove and refit myself ( excluding the air bag one on the glove box)

Any ideas

Pete

refinishing will be expensive but wrapping them is not. I believe forum member philhef and others have done wraps with great results.

bought a 3 gauge XKR, 2000 TYPE, to use as a front end DONOR car to fix my XK8 a while back and did sell the dash wood for a $few hundred. I have seen a few complete sets on ebay for the 'mid' hundreds range.

if you decide you want a set, that's a little more problematic than other options, as they are rare.

use STATEWIDELIST.com (select 'CLASSIC' at bottom of page), put XK8 in the first box for what you're looking for and in the category menu, select AUTO PARTS, then start selecting a STATE in the state drop down menu, then click on SEARCH LISTINGS and start looking for people/places that are parting out xk8's or xkr's and either reply by mail or MAKE THE PHONE CALL.

you'd be surprised how much you can find by doing that. the piece over the GLOVE BOX is the toughest to remove....just drop the box and remove upper bolts/fasteners.

good luck,

Hi Pete

I don't know which Eltham you live in, but if it is the South East London Eltham and your car is RHD, you can pick up a full set for £75. Here's the link: Jaguar XK8 veneer dash interior trim | eBay

That's a great looking set for an outstanding price.

Wish we could find deals like that in the States.

It's very odd how prices for different things vary between the UK and US (and probably other countries ).
For example - it's practically impossible to get front (standard) shock absorbers (dampers) here in the UK for less than $275.00 US (£176.00 UK) but it looks like they are available for around $165.00 US in the US and that's before any discount or "special offer" deal.
But - lower shock bushings are much cheaper here than in the US.

Strange !!

Pete,

I'm another who didn't know which 'Eltham' it is and had to look up your details to find out.

Adding Victoria or even Australia to your location would help get relevant information.

That is tempting Renault.

Even with freight to Oz it's a good deal.

My 2000 XKR seems to have much darker and closer grain timber though.

I will ponder it

Have a look at the seller's other items. They have quite a few to choose from.

Removing the veneer over the airbag isn't a problem. I've just done it on my XJ8 (near identical arrangement). Undo 4 bolts inside the glovebox - 2 in the roof at the front, and 2 at the back. Glovebox + veneer drops out. The veneer is a push fit into the airbag frame and is held by two straps (seatbelt webbing) which is located by a long pin which slides out (with assistance!) Look at the pics.

However, before you do anything you MUST disconnect the battery and touch the two cables together. After dropping the glovebox sit to one side and pull the plug (to the airbag) out in one jerk. The contacts are recessed but tape over them as your own static could trigger the detonator! (Set that off and you will be deaf for a day and you'll have to pay someone A LOT of money to clean the seat!)

When re-installing leave the battery disconnected and short the plug terminals (from the car loom) to earth before plugging the socket back together (sitting to one side again).
