Interesting experience at exhaust shop...
So I ordered parts for my exhaust, since I didn't want the Borla setup. Borla setup seemed a tad too loud for me, and I don't like how the tips stuck out the back.. The other kits were too expensive.
Anyways, first the guy asks me why I want to mess with a Jaguar. I respond "Relieve some backpressure, get a few more HP".
He responds... "Don't you think Jaguar probably spent millions and millions designing this car perfect?" Uh, hey doofus, they designed it to be QUIET for the mass of regular people who were going to drive it. Moron.
Anyways, he then checks out the stock setup and says... "Are you sure you want to replace this? It has a lot better flow than the aftermarket parts you brought in?"
uh, what? I brought in a hushpower resonator to replace the resonator, and 2 dynomax super turbo mufflers for the back. The exact model dynomax was tested against 15 other aftermarket mufflers and finished 4th in quietest and first in having the least restriction. And hes telling me that a top notch aftermarket muffler is more restrictive than our stock setup???
I then convince him to just do it. He does the front resonator resplacement, but then responds that he can't do the rear part. He says the fact that our muffler inlets are angled makes it impossible. uh, what? I bought short mufflers and tip on purpose so that a curved pipe could be added to the angled stock pipe and straighten out the whole thing before it reaches the mufflers. He says... "Well, we can try, but I'd have to just chop it off and then see how it goes"
Thanks for the vote of confidence, moron.
I left with just the front resonator replaced. It DOES have a nice growl now, but not the slightly louder sound I wanted (but not as loud as the borla). I do notice a small increase in speed, definately. It opens up around 4Krpms.
Anyways, just wanted to share my experience. I'm flattered that he thinks jaguars are made to absolute perfection and should not be modified, but I didn't need to lecture.

Well...I don't know what to say.....honestly.....the borlas are 500, with lifetime warranty and work great....I don't know how much you just spent between parts and labor, but if you think the borla's are loud on a jag.....you're wrong....
You must have heard them on a v-8 someplace....somewhere....

No, if it was straight through you would't be looking to replace them with performance mufflers...sounds like you need to find another exhaust shop.....someone who does custome exhaust systems...
Oh and BTW, your factory mufflers weight like 15lbs each.....compaired to my borlas which seem to only weigh like 5 lbs each....

I hope that's not the only shop you can go to. NEW SHOP should be going through your head the second the idiot says that Jaguars were made to absolute perfection! We WISH this were true, but we have to be realistic. Fabrication=Ordinary+Reparations=Daily bought Jag and since then, the quality just isn't the same.

True... The reason I went here and have been loyal is they did a good job on my eclipse back in the day... But since this yellow-tooth scary fool whos only talent in life is welding acted like Mr. Jaguar himself, I guess I'll go to another shop for the rear-end.
By the way... What type of inside does our stock muffler have anyways?

The mufflers are not straight through but you can make them almost that way. The exhaust comes in the inlet, flows to the end and does a 180 turn, flows back and does another 180 turn the then out the tailpipe.
This was not my idea but it works. You can drill out the inside of the muffler through the tailpipe and allow some of the exhaust to flow straight through...Holesaw and a 12" extension for ~ 30 bucks. The sound is not much louder if any at idle and adds a nice hum above 3K RPM. Seems to add a little power too

I did not drill out the Cats so I do not see how it could cause a problem with a smog test. It really is not any different than replacing your muffler with a different one...Borla...Remus...But it does not seem to be as loud.
It definately does work with our mufflers also. See the link of a picture from the guy who came up with it.

He has a cool mod to the airbox I am planning on doing to increase airflow in to the engine too

That is very interesting... It seems like it could really help, but maybe not. Definately worth trying if you're considering a new systems anyways. I'm surprised, I thought our tailpipes angled much more than that.
And yes, I doubt that would affect smog at all. Whether or not theres a hole in there, its the same exhaust flowing out and the same amount.

RE: Interesting experience at exhaust shop...
Unfortunately, after reviewing my muffler, its clear mufflers have changed between X-types as this mod cannot be done on mine.
My mufflers travel STRAIGHT back, and curve somewhere back there. The guy who gives the pics you can see his has a slight curve right inside the muffler, allowing some drilling out.
Also, mine has no perforated tube holes AT ALL, zero, just a completely straight back pipe and a curve waaaay at the back(well out of the 12" extension's reach).
Perhaps he has a 2.5 or who knows maybe an '02, but my 3.0 '03 hascompletely different internals with the muffler

RE: Interesting experience at exhaust shop...
i just dont get the obsession with flow...
The engine has little pistons that go up and down,, they suck in a known amount of air and push it out again.
The engine sucks in and blows out the most air at max RPM.... the intake and exhaust need to be designed to flow for this condition.
It is absolutely basic engineering to make sure that the systems are capable to handle this flow.
People bring up bottlenecks all the time...
but in the entire system from the intake horn to the tailpipe there can only be ONE bottlneck.. there cannot be several.
So unless you are some sort of genius the chances of getting the bottle neck opened up on intuitionare very slim.
and YA YA YAI knowI am over simplifying and that if you do change the over all flow resistance of the intake of exhaust you can make slight differences. But please give some credit to the most basic level ingineering. I agree with the muffler shop. the stock system is effecient, robust and quiet. adding Noise is just childish - it is a freaking Jag afterall not a ferrari.
The intake is particularlily painful to read about.. it is soooooooooo basic that the air filter and the passage ways have to be MUCH bigger already than what is needed for the max flow of air.
the filter has to be able to work when it is 50% clogged, it cannot be THE bottleneck when it is clean. By design it must be one of the least restrictive spots in the entire system.
Not really a rant but please consider that the Jag engineers are PAID to do good engineering. (even if i complain about my cars reliability)
the Aftermarket guys are paid when then sell you their crap. They are normally not engineers and are marketing people more than anything.
Bah... i know nobody cares hahahahahah
go ahead and add a coffee can muffler and run with the ricers.....

lol, I havent really wasted money, just time. I bought a front resonator and replaced mine. I'm sending back the rear setup and getting my money back and getting the borlas. With the front resonator replaced it may quiet down the borlas a little.
Im just trying to have a little fun ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO NEED TO SLIT MY WRIST AND DRINK MY BLOOD!!!!!!!!!!
ya know?
