Hello all,
Just posted in the intro section and figured I'd pop over here to see if I could get some ideas:

I'm looking at a 2003 x-type 2.5 auto.
Trans slipping, slow to engage into first, can be driven if super slowly. Current owner claims it barely drives... (transmission wise)

I've been reading all I can and think it could be something as simple as swapping fluid, and maybe looking at the electronics...

Bear in mind this would be my first time messing with such a complex car and while my wife and I are mechanically inclined, we've never worked on automatics. (car is for my mother- she needs auto due to bad knee)

I will be reading everything I can here but if anyone has any immediate ideas, input, expert advice, links, whatever... It's all welcome...

Hopefully I got here in time, but it may be as easy as just swapping fluid, however that will probably only fix the tranny for a max of around 20k miles. I have done a lot of auto tranny work on older cars like my 93 jeep, but I can tell you that these autos are very, very weak in the xtype. In fact a member posted pictures of the inside of his blown auto and it was completely stripped out. Hopefully you get this in time, but the auto transmissions on these cars are a complete nightmare

Thanks to all of you guys who posted here and helped me with this issue. After a few weeks of hunting for the "Goldilocks" car- we finally secured a car that my mother was satisfied with. (a Cadillac)

Hopefully, we'll have no issues but we'll see...

Thanks again to the super friendly and supportive folks here at the Jaguar forum. Maybe one of these days I will return with a cat of my own.

Best Regards....

If you do end up going the route of an xtype, I would highly recommend a manual. They are harder to find, but they are actually very reliable cars.
