Jaguar trade in value x-type 2002
So i'm looking to trade my 2002 x-type 3.0 in for maybe a 2007 or something a little newer with less problems, x-type or s-type or something else. Saw an x-type for sale today, and asked for a quote
Dealer offered me 1,700 for trade in value. Kelly blue book lists my car at least 1,900, that's the worst it can get. My car is in decent shape, looks new on inside, needs a few repairs etc, needs new shifter assembly.
all in all, I feel like my car is worth more?? any feedback or opinions appreciated!!

"Trade-in" value is infinitly variable. Kelly Blue Book, NADA, etc are guidelines....adhered to to varying degrees.
Much depends on the deal you are making on the car you want to buy. If the dealer is making a pot of money on it.....full asking price, let's say.....you can often negotiate a higher trade-in allowance. If you've already ground the dealer down to the last penny on the purchase he's not likely to be generous on the trade-in allowance.
If your trade-in is exceptionally nice (requiring little "reconditioning" before resale) popular model that typically brings a good profit at resale you might be able to get the dealer to offer more.
Anyhow....
Don't focus on trade-in allowance. That's a trap. Focus the "difference figure". If you see car you want do some homework on pricing of both your old car and the new one, and decide what you want to pay as a maximum difference figure. Offer your old car as a trade-in, and see how close the dealer can come to meeting your difference figure. He may change the both the selling price of the new car and the trade-in allowance of your old car in the number crunching process. No worries so long as the difference figure is within what you want to pay.

A Private Sale just about always makes you more money.
You'll leave a lot of money on the table if you trade it to a dealer, just to avoid a couple 'o hundred bucks in repairs. You mentioned the car needing a replacement shifter assembly, for instance.

Maybe invest a couple of hundred more in having the body detailed, and I just bet you can sell the car for thousands more than the current offer!
