The X-Type is great in the snow. Good enough for Top Gear to drive one down a ski slope.

About 20 years ago I used to pull my moms X-Type out of snow that was 6"+ deep just to shovel out around the spot for her car. It also did great otherwise. I thought it was partly do to the tires, where were some sort of Continental all seasons. I bought them for my Bonneville and they absolutely sucked in the snow. The AWD system was just that good.

The early cars with the viscous coupling in the transfer case are noticeably better in snow and ice than the later cars. I rebuilt the TC in my 07 with the coupling from an earlier case just to have the better winter performance.
