Knocking noise from rear end

I have an 2003 2.5 X-Type, and I am starting to hear a knocking sound coming from the rear end. I want to know first, if it has shocks or struts because I have seen both listed online.Secondly, how expensive of a repair I can expect if they need to be replaced?

when does the knocking appear? at low speed, accelerating, at high speed, cornering, braking, etc?
and, can you describe the sound better?

that taxi-cab rear end rattle was due to one of the suspension links having loose swivel joint at the end ..
very cheap part and easy to change.. If you unbolt the part, you can feel the loose swivel easily.

Okay thanks for the help. I'm not going to pretend to know much about cars, so I have to ask this question. Does the 2003 2.5 X-Type have rear factory shocks OR struts? I am finding listings for both online. A family friend is a mechanic and he thought it had struts but can't find any place to buy them. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Rear shocks are shocks...the front is a coilover setup. Good place to buy the part is the Jag dealer...any another other place will cost the same. You can probably getaway with a better price at a ford dealer. I think if you do a search for shock/coilovers a ton of online stores will pop up....pick one...

Hey bo any more particular on that part and location...mine is squeaking kind of when driving down the road and when people get in or out of the car...
