Default LIttle help diagnosing a noise.

I find myself to be a pretty competent technician (i was one in a previous life)
However the Kitty has a new noise (low pitch grinding, almost like scalloped truck tires) that is baffling me... i think

It only happens when i turn to the right at speed. No discernible noise while going forward, or while taking a left.

I am thinking L/F wheel bearing, but i have never come across one that does not make at least a little noise in front direction.

Any other opinions?

Just a thought... have you tried rotating/changing the front tyres.... to see if the noise persists then ?

Sounds like it could be Tyre/Tire related..?

(my 2cents)

Jagdoc, I would be leaning towards a wheel bearing too. It is possible that you are simply catching it early. But, I would recommend rotating tires just to eliminate that possibility.

I wouldn't be in a real hurry to get a wheel bearing just yet.

As an experience tech you know that complete bearing failure is an unlikely thing and typically won't happen until the bearing is making so much noise that you can't stand to drive the car anymore.

If it is a wheel bearing the noise will get worse so I'd let things go for a while and let your ear do its job diagnosing things. After all it really stinks to pay to replace one thing only to find out its something else (like the transfer-case...)
