Default Looking at the X-Type

I have been looking at the X-Type since 2002. Since then, I've bought several Lincoln LSs which have been very reliable. I am now looking at the X Type again but I am concerned about their long term reliability. I know that the earlier model years had their share of problems, but how have the 2005-08 models been?

I looked at an 06 3.0 recently, and found out from the dealer that the transfer case had to be replaced twice, at 40 and 41K miles. The car presently has 53K miles. Obviously, I am more spooked now, as I have read that after 2004 the reliability was much much better.

Thoughts?

lawrev, as for the transfer case life, that is all a matter of how you drive. You plan on getting to 60 mph as fast as possible, then yes, you will be replacing the transfer case in no time flat. You drive it sensibly with the occasional shot to 60 mph, then it will last you for a long, long time. I'm sure there are members here that are still on their factory transfer case and have over 100,000 miles. I know I am rolling over 100,000 miles here very soon and I believe I am still on the stock transfer case (hasn't been upgraded to the 04+ case). As for having a transfer case replaced after 1,000 miles, that sounds like it was bad from the start and should have not been installed in the first place.

If this is a car that you want, get it. Like any other car, there are known problems. Unfortunately, with this car it is the transfer case. But, that is manageable with more frequent lube changes (very easy once you make a slight modification, see forums for that or write me and I will give you the inside scoop on it) and being easy on the gas.

I'm sure other people will chime in and give you their 2 cents.

If you do your due diligence on a particular car you find and like it chances are you will be rewarded with a very satisfying ride for a good while. And if you buy one from a dealer and get the extended warranty you have nothing to worry about. Plus, you mentioned that since looking at the car in 2002 you have bought "several" Lincolns, that means you relace your car every 2-3 years anyway, so if for some reason you get an X and decide it isn't what you were expecting just trade it in your next buying cycle. Go for it!!!!!!

Default Buy one!!

whats up guys... new to this site dont have any pics up yet but check out my page on cardomain... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3213415

And to answer your question about whether to buy a X-type or not?? Lawrev get one.. 05 or newer and get it from the dealership.. cars are cheap right now and if youo get one from Jaguar it will be certified and wrranty will be extended.. and dont let the sticker price fool you man... you should be able to save at least $2K on one.. my local dealership here LeithJaguar in Raleigh NC has an 05 for $15,500 and an 06 for $18,900.. i would pay more than 13 for the 05 and more than 15,000 for the 06.. just find your local jag dealership and they are eager to sell man...

Just make sure you for at least 04+ as most probs sorted by then. As previously stated make sure you thoroughly check the vehicle and get extended warranty and you should be good to go.
If you do go for it...we're here for ya too.

Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I drove a 02 2.5 Sport MTX today and at 71,000 miles it is still tight as a drum. I did like the sport suspension and the seats. Car has had a fair amount of work done on it, but I guess it is better to be repaired now than on my watch. Car is no longer eligible for the Jag extended warranty, but the dealer has a comparable extended warranty for $2200-$3000 depending on whether you want a 1 or 2 year term.

Maybe I do want a sport model after all, but wasn't 06 the last year for the sport model? Or was it 05?

Also, don't forget just because one particular vehicle was driven hard/repaired with a bad transfer case, doesn't necessarily means all or most X-Types will. You can look online to find see if there is any other X-Types in your area as well if this particular car is giving you pause.

The thing about buying a car is that if you get it from a random dealership the warranties may be offered but are not as good as Jaguars. Go to this link here http://www.jaguarusa.com/us/en/pre_o...m_benefits.htm

This is what comes with the car... all those other non factory aftermarket warranties are not nearly as good... and like i said normally you would stay away from the jaguar dealership because prices are high but right now, they are dying to sell you a car... 05 was the only year the sport came with the front lip like you see on mine.. guess people complained it was too low and kept scrapping them on drive ways so.. 06 sport models are out there too...
