Default MagnaFilters

Hey..I was wondering if anyone uses a MagnaFilter and if so are they worth it?, or is it just a gimmick?

Also do they last forever or does anyone know when they need to be changed out?

Here's what I'm talking about for those that dont know:

Thanks for the help!

Well Strafe, I can't see how it could possible trap anything that a regular quality filter would not get. Use quality oil and filter and change every 3 to 5k miles.

Strafe, well, I look at it this way, the magnet in a filter like that is a completely worthless item. If you are getting any metal shavings, then you are having an oil that isn't doing its job and you are going to have a motor that will fail very shortly anyways. So, save your money and invest it in a quality oil and filter.

I use magnetic filters one Power steering units and transmissions because those things don't have good original filters and the magnaguards are compact and easy to install. I change them out every 50 thousand miles, except for the first one you install should only go about 10 miles.

Thanks for the responses. And yeah..now thinking about it, a good oil with regular changes should eliminate the need for a magnafilter. In my older cars I always used Valvoline "Extended Life".

For my X-Type I'm thinking about going to Castrol Syntec which is what the dealer here uses ($95.00 for an oil change & $40.00 for a tire rotation..yeah in there dreams!).

Thanks for bringing it into perspective.
