Default Major water leak

My 2005 X-Type has a very bad water leak into passenger side compartment I removed the cowl and found the filter for HVAC open to the weather like a big scoop. I went to a junk yard to look at another car and it was the same way. My question to the forum is how is this system able to keep water from entering into the HVAC fan and into the car. Water coming down the windshield can roll right into this poorly designed system. How is it suppose to work?

I ended up sealing the cowl to the windshield with some caulk.

Also, if you're replacing the filter, clean the area directly below where it's seated. Any clogged up debris in that area will cause spillover into the filter, and eventually the vent.

Probably not the most elegant solution, but it keeps the filter nice n dry.

Thanks gkubrak That is what I was thinking to do I need to have the windshield replaced will have then do that. I was wondering if I took a piece of tin and formed it over the filter to make a hood to say.

Are you sure it is not the drain that maybe blocked from the bottom of the screen as this runs behind the A pillar.
