Manual Transmission shifting issues
Hello Jaguar Owners.
I have done multiple successful repairs to my 2002 X type 2.5 thanks to assistance, guidance and encouragement from the owners on this sight and extend a sincere "Thanks!"
I am currently running in into three problems that are impeding full enjoyment of the Jaguar driving experience.
1. I own a 2.5 manual 5 speed that was originally built in England and shipped to the US by the prior owner. The steering wheel is on the U.S. side. The issue is that I started having slight problems shifting into third 2 months ago that only recently (this week) turned into problems shifting into the other forward gears. Well today, pulling from a stop light, I lost all gears. No noise, just shift freely, no forward or reverse motion. I restarted the car, and got it to go into 2nd gear for enough time to pull off road. I sat, examined, and after 15 minutes with much effort, it gave 3rd, but for only 300 feet. I sat 30 minutes and it gave me 2nd gear which I used to get home 35 miles later. Any input on this situation?
2. I admit failure to gain prior knowledge, but what is the purpose of the spring loaded plastic chrome painted shaft that slides on the shifter column? It extends from below the shift knob down past the the two cables secured to the shifter shaft. Mine broke under the gear leather holder long ago and since I could still drive despite it being broken, I never inquired further.
3. I haven't been able to determine why my Jaguar still runs hot and stays hot despite the temp gauge never going past first 1/4 mark, newly replaced thermostat and housing, and new water pump (plus burping exercises -Thanks Thermo!)?
Sorry for the long winded post and again, each of you are heroes.

Hello, fellow 5 speeder,
1. I am a bit confused about this. When you are having a problem:
a. does the clutch feel normal?
b. does it only happen when it is very hot?
c. do you feel the transmission go into each gear normally?
d. do you smell anything? (no I'm not in your car)
e. is the clutch slipping when you do get it to move?
2. I believe that spring is to just hold the shifter boot (shifter trunk?) up.
3. Always clean grounds

Thanks for your response.
Yes, normal clutch. But doesn't stick gear sometimes, requiring downshifting or upshifting skipping 3rd gear (2 to 4).
Happens soon after start-up.
No, tranny doesn't go into gears.
No smell.
Yes, clutch slippage.
Topped off brake/clutch fluid (DOT 4), changed gear oil and transfer case fluid (75w-140 synth), will do standing gear shift for fluid flow and test drive tomorrow.

Which lubricant did you use for the transmission? Not that it would be the source of your problem, but I believe that the transmission takes 75w90 oil and the transfer case and rear differential take the 75w140. I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.
