The actual buttons may be frozen up. It happened to me and I had to buy a new remote online for $20 and reprogram the fob of it.

You can get the same fob as for a ford mondeo(uk) so the remote body shouldn't be too much to replace.

Someone in another key fob programming thread suggested cleaning the fob. I could not get mine to reprogram either so I tried the cleaning thing and now it works (sorta). I opened it up and cleaned the contacts with alcohol and a q-tip. it now works but takes a good hard push of the buttons to lock and unlock. The trunk button never stopped working. You may check to see if the trunk or headlight buttons work. If so it may just need a little cleaning too. Good luck. I was pretty frustrated trying to get light flashing to work.

I have some that don't work even with a new battery. I opened them
up to try to clean them but the switches are little enclosed units
that cannot be opened. I don't think that cleaning the outside would
make any difference. You can't get at the contacts.

I have not tried contact cleaner spray yet. Since they are junk anyway
I might give it a try. I also have an ultrasonic cleaner. I might give
a go with that. I wonder if the ultrasonics might damage the electronic
circuits or the chips.

Pete.
