Holy spit!!!
Strange how you can look at something hundreds of times and still miss an obvious thing. I've watched tons of videos, read posts, looked at pictures and never noticed this thing =

On nearly every video, in pics, the tip electrical connector on the fuel pump is a small square plug in female. In taking multiple pictures of my used replacement pump today, it dawned on me it's different than every other one I've seen.

Now what the hell do I do if I cut the access out and mine has the small plug like all I've seen?

So here is the answer. I called 5 Jaguar dealers today and LAS VEGAS JAGUAR was the only one with an IMMEDIATE answer (what a pleasure to speak to an informed intelligent knowledgeable parts guy), said Jaguar has 2 different production run assemblies for the tank and pumps. It is NOT dependent on year, nor vin numbers or ranges. One run uses the "pigtail" hookup on top of the pump, the other use the 6 pin (molded into the top of pump) type electical hookup. They cannot tell which any particular car has until they drop the tank and physically look at the pump.

This is not good news nor very intelligent (imo) on Jaguar's part. This is turning into a gigantic p.i.t.a.!

It appears in my research thus far, that the "modeled top" pump is a Spectra sf5139m. It has the 6 pin in a row connection on the top of the pump. So I question the "3 different run production" thing. Maybe 2 different suppliers using different pumps thereby different connectors? Who the heck knows the bottom line truth as to why there are 2 different types not dictated by model year or vin run number and not even searchable by a Jag dealer as to which is on any particular car.

This is the only site that shows both, 2 with the "molded top" & 1 with the "pigtail". I love continuity!!

Here is a couple videos that will help.

The worst part for me was getting to cap back on. I did not cut as big of a hole for mine as the guy in the red jag did.

2nd video has good measurements for cutting..

Two different pump suppliers with different electrical connectors running at the same time independent of VIN would mean different body wiring harnesses. The harness installers would have to know beforehand what pump was being installed chassis by chassis at some other part of the assembly plant. It is possible in the same way that 1 car gets a heated seat and the next car down the assembly line doesn't, but in this case the build sheet would be dependent on supply on hand?? How would a purchaser balance the orders for different wiring harnesses? How would the quality engineer be able to get out of bed in the morning? And logistics...They need to have parts available worldwide at dealerships for a minimum of 6 years after date of manufacture (not sure about Jag but that is true of Ford and Ford owned Jag at the time). That is twice the pumps and wiring harnesses in warehouses all over the world where Jaguar is paying for shipping and storage and inventory control.

It is such a nightmare of engineering that I have to think, if it is true they had 2 pumps with different connectors, there has got to be a connector out there that converts 1 to the other.

Amazon lists 2 brands of pigtail fuel pumps. The common part # is FG1655. Interestingly, the Brock listing says: "02 03 Jaguar X-Type (models built up to VIN D55321 ONLY)"

Delphi for $372
Amazon Amazon

Brock for $72
Amazon Amazon

Welch Enterprises sells a $86 pump without canister, working in my 2002 without hiccup for ~4 years and ~30K miles, part # C2S41300:

According to the Las Vegas Jag guy, no. And I searched only 3.0 gas. As he said, even in their dealership, he doesn't know which pump is on any given car until they drop the tank. Optically look at the one installed, then he gets the pump that fits. Having this disparity across years and vins (not searchable by what's in it by vin, I asked) is beyond my black/white ideology.

So I'll post progress today pictures. Took some with pics of exact measurements in the photo. I can tell you as I used the air driven nipper (HB ~ $24), I was elated to see the electrical connection on my 2006 matched the used 20"4 pump I got. It is the MOLDED top type. Can't tell you what a relief it was to see that black oblong electrical connector sitting on the top of my existing pump. Progress was halted by not being able to get the ring loose. Wood dowel tapping, PB Baster, more tapping, broke a couple of the plastic raised tabs. So, I gave up and have ordered a fuel pump ring removal tool.

Initial measuring and marks. 15"X15" (back of seat towards front and from door plastic guard towards driver's side was close to center of pump but off some.

15"X15" centering with some pilot holes. Again this was close but not exact.

Close up. NOTE : My electrical connector is the "Molded plastic" type that when removed shows 6 pins in a row.

Trunk to front measurement

Passenger's side towards driver's side closer measurement

Tag on pump top

Tag on wiring harness (w/date)
