Default Is my tranny going out on me?

today i was driving around in my neighborhood and when i accelerated the cars RPM went up like to the 4 (i think its 400,000?) the car didnt go any faster it just reved up. I let go of the pedal and let RPM drop a bit then i accelerated and the car was fine again.
Is something wrong or is it normal?

I wanna be in PTown too!

The "4" would be 4,000 RPM. At 400,000 RPM your pistons would have launched themselves straight through the engine block and into orbit around Jupiter.

A slippy tranny is not a good sign if it starts happening with any regularity. are you sure your shifter wasn't halfway between neutral and drive - and then locked in on drive - a one-time thing? a greasy spot on the road? a PTown patch of sand? If your tranny is going sideways on you, it will exhibit that behavior with increasing frequency until it leaves you revving helplessly like a beached walrus somewhere in North Truro.

What year is the car and how many miles on it? If the transmission fluid has never been flushed/changed and it's way overdue, that can cause all sorts of odd symptoms, including what you've described.

Bring it to a trustworthy independent mechanic or to the dealer for the fluid change. If you bring it to a transmission shop, they're likely to try to sell you a new transmission for $1500 when all you really need is $20 worth of fresh tranny fluid and the $30 of labor to replace it.
