Default Need More Power!!!

While driving the other day, I've noticed this before but haven't paid much attention to it, I was getting on the interstate and accelerated with a bit more "spirit" there was a noticable power plateau in 4th before the car accelerates enough to shift into 5ht. Do any of you other guys experience this???

While driving with the J-gate the power plateau is almost eliminated but still there so I was wondering is this the nature of our cars or is there some big problems in my future?

FYI: 77K miles on my 2004 3.0 automatic

It's probably because you're at a speed where it really should downshift to 3rd to wind out the engine through the last 100-200rpms or so, but most cars don't like to do that so they'll just downshift to 4th and chug along until it can get back in the proper powerband for 4th gear.

A lot of cars really should be programmed to downshift at least one more gear than their programmed on kickdown. It's really frustrating. I don't care if the car is gonna have to upshift almost immediately after dropping down the gears, that's where the power is, that's where I want it to be.

Unless I'm reading your situation wrong and the car is just plain sluggish all the way up to redline in 4th (unless to use the J-gate which fixes it).

The car isn't sluggish it definitely drives as well as i could expect this car to drive. The J-gate brings out the best in the car . I have never redlined this car, no real need to. So here is the scenario: when accelerating from a stop up, keep in mind I'm NOT putting the pedal to the floor, to fifth gear in "D" the car responds as expected. The RPMs climb to about 3400 before shifting to the next gear. However when the car is in 4th gear and and the rpms are climbing up to about 3000 the tachometer hangs out there for about a 1/4 of a second before moving past that and up high enough to shift to 5th.

So my observation is that the tachometer moves smoothly through its rpm ranges on all other gears but pauses for a bit around 3000 in fourth before accelerating enough to shift into 5th.
