Hi JMG. I am fairly new to the forums too. I just finished a intense process of looking at 2005 and 2006 jag x-types.

The price is right for the miles. In fact I never saw a price advertised near that low. Negotiation can lower considerably though.

Some things to consider. Geography. Where are you, and where has this car been. I always want to check for rust because of where I live.

Here is a checklist I used (but I modified it for my own purposes):

http://www.popularmechanics.com/cm/p...-checklist.pdf

It seems tedious, but you really need to check all those little electronic parts. Especially the NAV unit if it has one. Just because it is in there doesn't mean it works. Also the lights and turn signals.

You can find the Jaguar Handbook here (look for one in the car too--it is supposed to be there):

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...d-10577/page2/

Familiarize yourself with the climate functions etc. This will save you a lot of time, AND the dealer will be a little more hesitant to pull one over on you.

Some things I found:

Most headlights from 2005 are yellowed and pitted. This can be fixed, and is not a big deal (of course you point out the problem to them). Hopefully it is only the outside. If there is dirt or moisture inside, you will need to take them off and take them apart. This means removing the front bumper and baking the lights (or using a heat gun) to get them apart to clean and then reseal. Instructions are in this forum.

Many left front speakers don't work. I don't know why, but that was true on several I drove.

One had the jack missing (it should be under the spare in the back, but I often found it sitting on top of the spare).

Drive it up to 55+ mph if you can. Listen and feel for vibrations.

Listen for knocks and pops from the wheels when riding over bumps. These indicate bushing replacements. Some are easily and cheaply replaced, others not. If you hear them, you will want to have a mechanic look at it.

I found that if I said I wanted my mechanic to look at it, some would take it in their shop and fix it first.

If your mechanic does look at the car (recommended when possible--I couldn't always do so because of distance), check the oil pan for possible leaking--he will probably do so anyway.

I found one hood/bonnet that would not open. This is not uncommon, but an easy fix for the dealer--insist he do it, you want to look under there.

2004+ models are easier to physically fit after market head (audio/nav) units, if you have just the basic Jag head unit.

I believe all 2005+ cars come with premium sound, and 17" tires. Every one I looked at did.

Finally, I chose the x-type because I wanted an AWD car. I actually prefer the S-type look and size, but AWD was a necessity.

Good luck! And Welcome!
