My 2004 x-type (bought used) came with only one key. For many reasons I want another key made and have heard many many different stories about only the dealer being able to program the fob and then many saying the dealer doesn't need to.

What am i in for in getting a new key... what about the blank ones sold like on eBay and all... I see the key and the fob sold separately as well as together. New to all this so bear with me please.

Joe, define the "FOB". Keep in mind that you have 2 pieces to the FOB. You have the remote for the doors and whatnot, then you have the part for the key. You can program the door portion of the FOB as much as you want with only a single key. To make the key part work, that is where the dealership is needed (unless you had 2 working keys already). So, this is one of those cases where both sides are correct to a degree.
