New member looking at 2002 X Type
Hi All - I have a chance to purchase a 2002 x-type from a 'little old lady'. She is actually a distant relative that had her keys taken away recently by family and now just wants the car to be gone.
I am going to look at it this weekend but don't know much about it at this time. It has about 62,000 miles on it, black exterior/black interior and according to the family it is 'loaded' with options. It is a mid-west car (Dayton, OH) but every year except the past two it was shipped to Florida in January and back home in April so not used around here during the winter. I have been told is was very well maintained but will want to look at service records. They are asking $2,000.
I have read about the rust issues at the sills and I will check that closely but hopefully with it not being driven in salt areas during the winter that will not be an issue. I have also read about the transfer case issues and know to drive and listen very closely for any whining noises. I enjoy working on cars and can turn a wrench so most any regular maintenance items I can do myself.
If I purchase this vehicle it will primarily be used by my daughter to get to class and back. I like what I have read about the all wheel drive in this model so should be safe for her during the winter months.
Two questions. 1. What else should I be looking for that is specific issues to this car? If I do get it, what maintenance item should be at the top of my list?
2. Price - I know that without knowing specifically what options or even engine is has but for $2,000 with low miles does this sound reasonable?
Thanks!
