New sills on x-type 2007
Hi, I am planning to replace both outer sills on my x-type estate as they are both rotted away almost! MOT failure of course.
I have stripped part of them away with my car on axle stands at the front and on the wheels at the back, but it was a pain, so I intend to raise the car further. I also intend to replace the sills as complete units, so more stripping away is needed and that is another worry. With no outer sills, will the car twist or sag if I use the regular lift points?
My intention because of this is to do each side in turn and put both wheels on the 'doing' side on ramps so that the weight is taken on all four road wheels and not on the sills at all. Does this make sense to folks? Am I doing it wrong?
Has anyone replaced the whole sill before and can offer me some advice?
Cheers!

Zomby, they make a special drill bit for drilling out spot welds. You are going to want to get that. This will make what you are doing as easy as possible. You simply go back to the nearest joint, drill out the spot welds and the part will come out. The new part will slide right in and you fill the holes with your welder and tada, panel replaced. I would only do 1 side at a time to help keep the frame straight. A body shop would mount a bunch of sensors to verify the body is straight after the work. This is where a little bit of pre-marking things and then using a string pulled tight will tell you if things are out of kilter or not.
I would probably get say 8 jackstands. You will then put 4 in the front (2 in front of the wheels, 2 behind the wheels) and then 4 more for the rear (2 in front of the rear wheels on the differential support and 2 behind the wheel). This will ensure that the car is not going to rotate in the middle on you. This should help keep everything within parameters.

Here's a site for a complete set for both sides with everything you need to replace the parts =

This is a U.S. based parts store (they'll have them in GB somewhere) that Thermo spoke of =

If you want to go nuts here's a whole set =

Hi, thanks for the info. I am always confused by the location to put stands on the x-type.
I have the necessary drill bits already - thanks for mentioning them.
I don't suppose that you know of a reference to the body panels available for the x-type do you? I have a LR Disco II and the workshop manual lists all the panels and the weld types for every weld and it sure helps.

You could download the X type workshop manual off the main page under the "stickies".
Also when you get a moment go to your account and add your car specs into your signature (as seen in mine & others), it makes future advice easier for members (i.e. year, fuel type, auto/manual etc.).
