I have a 2005 x-type 2.2d with 140,000 miles that I've owned for a couple of years without issue. I recently replaced the EGR valve after the engine light came on and cleaning the valve failed to get rid of the p0405 code.

I should have checked for a vacuum at the EGR before replacing it but unfortunately I didn't. With the new valve I still get the p0405 code. There's no vacuum at idle the valve, so I checked the vacuum pipe (ok) which lead me to the rubber part in the picture below where the EGR vacuum pipe, a pipe that connects to the inlet manifold and a pipe that connects to the brake servo all connect.

There doesn't appear to be something like a vacuum solenoid for this rubber part to connect to. After taking it off and testing, I found that none of the pipes connect to each other via it and that each of the holes in it individually vent to atmosphere.

I cannot see how the EGR valve would have ever worked, as a vacuum could never have never been present at the EGR with this setup. The part has not been disturbed in my 2 years of ownership. I found it dangling between the starter motor and the bottom of the battery box.
