Default Oil Filter location

I usually change my oil and oil filter myself and like to change the drain plug at the same time.

I am out of the UK for a few months so do not have any of my tools with me so got a couple of quotations.

I went back a workshop 2 days ago and booked it in for an oil change 5W40, oil filter and drain plug.

When I got it back home I saw they had not pushed the dipstick in properly, I looked under the car and saw they had put a load of putty/sealant around the drain plug.

I wondered why because I have never had a drop of oil on the garage floor and I have had the car for 7 months.
So I drove back to the garage and asked why they had put sealant around the drain plug, had they cracked the sump or threaded the bolt?

I said I want to drive it onto the lift so we can both look under the car and see what the mechanic has done.
I pointed out that they had not changed the sump plug, he said he had not charged me for it but it clearly says replaced sump plug on my receipt.
The boss agreed that the sealant looked ugly and he drained the oil again and put some sealant on the drain plug but not all around it this time

When I got home I wondered if they had actually changed the oil filter.
I should have looked when it was on the lift but was so angry was not thinking straight.

Where is the oil filter situated on a 2005 X-Type? I assume from the sump plug that it is more towards the front of the car but it is hard to get underneath to find it.
Are there any pictures on the site to help me locate it?

2005, walk around to the front of the car. Lay down on your back and slide your head under the bumper of the car. If you slide your right hand under the bumper and on to the plastic tray underneath, your hand should run over an opening that is about 10cm x 10cm in size that is square. Look up in that hole and you should see the filter sitting there at a 45 degree angle to the block of the engine. It will be about 15 cm above the plastic tray.

Would it not be switched around Chris for the right hand drive?

Dr, the engines are set up the same, the only difference is there is a different steering rack that goes in the car to handle the right hand drive. The rest is pretty much the same. Ifyou look on your car, you will probably find the recess where the hole could be punched out for making your car RHD.

That was a very good description, thank-you very much.

I can just get my head under the car when laying on my back, there is no moisture around the top of the oil filter or around the sump plug after a half hour drive yesterday.
