To be of help we will need a little bit more information. You state only one latch will release. Which one is releasing?
When you pull the handle in the passenger compartment does the bonnet pop up?
If it pops up can you feel and move the secondary latch?
I have attached a parts blow up of the bonnet latches. Latch 1 is cable operated from the cabin and latch 2 is reached from behind the grill.

Is the car left or right hand drive? I am guessing right hand.

The X-Type bonnet opens from the front. What are the full details for your vehicle. XJ8,XJR, XK8, or XKR or is your model newer than 2009. Whatever it is, it's not the 2001 to 2009 X-Type.

Vern, I believe he does have a 2003 X-Type with the 2.5 liter in looking at his profile and previous posts. I think he means he can tell that one side the catch releases and the other does not.

KDog, if you do a search on here you can find a number of threads that explain how you might be able to release the latch from under the car with a wooden stick or something similiar.

If you jack the car up and crawl underneath you can just see the latches (with a torch)and with a bit of perseverance and a long handled screwdriver/stick/rod you can just reach the latch and prise it open.
I can't remember if you have to take the undertray off or not.

Just keep in mind the latch releases towards the CENTER of the car.

Also, a caution from Jaguar =

JTIS excerpt =

Engine-Compartment Lid Ajar Switch Last Modified06-APR-2009 09:19 CategoryBody Symptom112000 Latches/Locks & Security ContentIssue:
On investigation of warranty returns it has been noted that the engine-compartment lid latch has been lubricated.
Cause:
Lubricant applied to the engine-compartment lid latch during routine servicing or for any other reason will, over time, migrate into the ajar switch and cause damage to the switch.

Action:
DO NOT lubricate the engine-compartment lid latch as this may cause damage to the ajar switch, which may result in a rejected warranty claim for the latch.

Hi all just to say I got it open a great big thanks to all, the video was most useful,I got my car on garage ramps today ,one thing was different with my car to the one on the video the gap I had to work with to put bar though was smaller so I couldn’t shine a torch or look when I put in the prise bar up towards the catch ,I gave the bar a couple of small swing movements then Wow the bonnet jumped up ,one thing I must say when I was looking up to the catch with a torch , I had someone pull the release lever it did pull over but not enough to unlock which flung me ,the cable must be stretched ,the unlock requires full lever to centre of car ,,, YEAH I can check my oil heat again thanks all really happy

either the cable is stretched, or the outer cable sheath lock that slips into each latch is broken(most common) and you need to replace the cables
