Over heating
Just noticed the Jag over heating today. Temperature needle wouldsteadily risepast the 3/4 mark....then within 3 secondsdrop down to 1/2 mark which is the normal on my car.I did notice the fans louder than usual, constantly. I did this throughtout my 45 min drive. I just parked right now...and notice a puddle of fluid near the front end...going to check it out after its cool down. Maybe the thermostat going faulty?

Keep in mind the temp gauge is a massaged signal. It does not indicate engine temperature directly. As long as the temp is in the normal range, the needle is kept dead centre.
Jag does not want people to worry when thing are normal.
If your gauge is moving, then it means that it really got too hot. My thermostat failed at around 145000km, the gauge went bananas... I would say if you are inclined to do the work yourself , do it. the part is cheap, There is a known leak on the housing that you can tend to at the same time. There is a TSB that says add a second hose clamp.
I was stranded and confused because the gauge was behaving so oddly thatI could not guess what was wrong. I had to pay the dealer almost 3 hundred dollars to do the work. It sucked.
Anyway keep up posted. both the leak and the temp gauge may be an easy fix.

I just hit 56,000 miles. The previous owner had changed the antifreeze when got the car with 49,000, im guessing likely its the thermostat..so ill just change the antifreeze again to play it safe.

try this.... see if it helps.. My dealer flatly refused to do this for free... eventhough my VIN in in the TSB.

The double clamps only apply to 2002 -03 model years and most likly all have been fixed by the dealer, but won't hurt to check. It applies to the top hose.
Don;t forget to check the belt on the water pump

Well I was hoping that I had a leaky water hose...but I pin pointed my problem..I have a leaky water pump. Let me make sure...the pump is located near the battery right? [8D]HA I noticed the dripple of water underneath the pulley, so time to get a quote from my Jag buddy.
Yeah oh the rear of the engine with the small belt. Job is easy and I'm sure you can do it yourself....i'm betting if you go to the dealer, expect to pay 300....(just a guess) so let us know..
HA yeah it doesnt look too hard to unbolt the water pump. Im just going to get some quote on a OEM water pump. Does it have an self adjustable belt tensioner? What other antifreeze you guys recommend besides the Dealer type? If I have too Ill buy it there.[/align]

why replace tensionner. I am at 160k km and mine it running fine, new waterpump belt 20k km ago.
I also think that ANY Al coolant is risky. BMW has good coolant and it is not expensive at the dealer.. Jag charges a fortune.
For long life of an alloy engine, check carefully. some cheap coolants need to be changed almost yearly to be effective against corrosion. I doubt many of us do that.
